Raynaud's Phemomenon

I posted on here the other day about nipple tingle. Well I talked to a Lactation Specialist and she said she thinking I have Raynaud's Phemomenon. She said she never met anyone who had it, but she thinks I do. Apparently it's when your nipples resond to the cold. As in change in temp from in baby's mouth to the room temp when he lets go. Does anyone else here know if they have it? Or know more about it? Here are some links: https://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/nipple-blanching/

Re: Raynaud's Phemomenon

  • My nipple does the same thing. I struggled with bad latches for weeks so when she came off my nipple was white. My LC said it was probably just blanching. I think you would experience numbness in your hands or feet if you had Raynaud's. I am by no means an expert just sharing my experience. Hang in there!!!

I have it. I also get in my fingers if it's really cold. Are you pumping at all @Suzanne237‌? Mine got worse if my pump setting is too high. It's not the cold that gets me, it's the suction and latching. Nipple shells help, and I also roll my nipples after a feed to get the blood flowing again.

  • Yes, my fingers get it when I'm cold, too. Yes, it looks like it's related to blanching as that is basically what happens. I guess it's from the suction but also temp because when I get a shower it feels so good under the hot water, but when I shut it off and the cold air hit me and …. yeah. :)@Pankers I read that so I tried it lower and it did help.

  • I experienced it with my first pregnancy, you can have this even if you have never had any other Reynaud's symptoms. However for me it was much more than a tingle, it felt like someone had placed vise grips on my nipples. Started during pregnancy especially when going from warm car or building out into the winter air (yes, I was clothed!). I called it "nipple attacks", and it wasn't until I researched more while breast feeding that I figured out what it was. I was blaming bad latch for the pain and was constantly worried about latch latch latch. By the time I figured it out what it was, I was about done BFing and it had also gotten a bit better, but I understand there is a medication that can help, too.
  • I had it vasospasms really bad at the beginning of nursing this time. I found a heating pad on by chest right after nursing or pumping helped. I had a lactation consult reccomend hand warmers as well and said you can find reuseable ones ( I never did).
Mine improved as my little one got bigger and his latch improved. Though right now it is flaring up as his latch is off due to teething.
    Hope yours improves.
  • Thanks for the comments. My LC said to try applying heat and if it's still painful then she would prescribe the med if I wanted it. Looks like u just take the med for a week and it might clear it up. If not, then another week. Says usually 3 weeks max. So might be worth it. Yep, kept blaming latch latch latch but I think he's doing it right.
