Painting while pregnant

So we just moved into a new house and I got frustrated with the color that was in the kitchen so I went ahead and painted it yesterday without much thought of it being unsafe. Of course I thought about it afterwards and got worried after looking online that I probably should have taken more precautions. The paint I did use was low-odor/ low-voc and I did have all the windows open. But I didn't wear a mask which I wish I would have now. I am 31 weeks pregnant and am now worried that I may have harmed my LO. I don't know why I didn't think about doing some research before jumping into the task :( has anyone else done some painting while pregnant? Should I be worried?

Re: Painting while pregnant

  • I painted my son's room when I was pregnant. Kiddo is a healthy active 5 year old. Relax, you'll be ok

Same as the other PPs, I painted my DDs room with low-VOC with the windows open and a fan on and she's just fine.  I should add I also did some detailed accent painting in her room at 7.5-8 months pregnant with the low-VOC which pretty much had my nose only inches from the wall I was painting.

  • Avoid spray paint and stain. Other than that u are good to go.
  • Low VOC with proper ventilation is just fine! It's when you find the scent really strong, get light-headed, or dizzy that it's a cause for concern.

  • You'll be fine. I looked into this when I was pregnant with DS. We were doing a lot of painting and remodeling in our house and I was living in paint fumes and spackle dust.

You'll be ok.  And most people think that a dust mask is doing something to protect them and it is totally NOT.  Dust masks are for dust!  The only mask that will protect you during painting is a respirator with filters made for organic solvents:

This is what I wear when painting, but I am particularly cautious.  Again, you will be fine, it was only one day of exposure.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. All of the labels clearly say that painting in the third trimester gives you a 450% chance of your baby turning into a velociraptor.
Well... since a velociraptor was what I was hoping for this is especially good news for me.

I want a puppy. Is it raw sushi or lunch meat that turns your baby into a puppy?
Neither, it's being in a room with a microwave. DO YOUR RESEARCH LADY!
