High-Risk Pregnancy

Progesterone Suppository Side Effect

Hi All,

I have been lurking for some time as my last pregnancy was high risk and I am about 10 weeks pregnant with our second child and on progesterone suppositories. Everything is going allright except for one very strange side effect - I have horrible wheezing and coughing fits that are very random since I began the progesterone at week 4. My doctor is aware and said she is not concerned but it's just very frustrating and almost scary at points. I am sticking it out of course because I want to make certain my progesterone levels stay good but I am wondering if anyone ever had a similar side effect with progesterone? Just curious, thank you!

Re: Progesterone Suppository Side Effect

  • This sounds very odd and totally unrelated to the suppositories. I was on the suppositories last pregnant, but I think i started at 18 or 20 weeks. The only side effect I had was the oozing out as it melted. I would make sure you're checked for lung sounds and things like pneumonia or bronchitis.

  • I agree with PP that doesn't sound like it is related at all to the suppositories. I started them at 25 weeks and as with PP the only thing I noticed is that it leaks out as it melts (which is super gross feeling and annoying).

When was the last time you talked to your doctor about it? I know you mentioned that she is not concerned. Call them and let them know how you are feeling and get checked out again. You might have something else going on.

  • Can't say I have seen that side effect
  • thanks ladies! Sorry I haven't been on in a few weeks and just saw the responses! Sure enough, I have now been taken off the progesterone suppositories since Sunday and I still have wheezing. Maybe bad allergies? So I am going to call my doctor again and see what is going on here. Thank you!
  • This is a bit late, but late in my first pregnancy I developed a nasty cough. Dr listened to my lungs and said they were clear. It went away the day I gave birth.

This pregnancy the cough started much earlier. Again clear lungs. Dr said I could take claritin. It's a productive cough and I've never had allergies before.
  • Lurker but I had wheezing and shortness of breath that I'm pretty sure was just hormonal. I had it at the beginning of my pregnancy, but it cleared up pretty quickly. I think it's an uncommon but possible pregnancy issue, though I would keep bringing it to your OB if you're not seeing any relief.
