Engorgement tips?

Hi ladies, even though I am a STM I swear I have forgotten so many things. DS2 is 5 days old and my milk just came in today. My breasts are rock hard in spots and super sore, which I know is normal, but does anyone have any relief tips? DS2 is eating every 2-3 hours so it isn't like I am missing or skipping any feedings. Just not sure what I can do to alleviate some of the pain and heaviness, so any and all input is appreciated.

Re: Engorgement tips?

  • You can hand express some milk to relieve the pressure or hot shower. Don't pump as it's only a vicious circle

It sucks! DS only eats twice in the night so I wake up rock hard. Luckily it will all even out eventually :) hang in there!

I took ibuprofen but other than that, the only thing that helped was time. It was really sore for a day but that's it. Ice packs also helped
  • Thanks ladies. Not going to pump to relieve it, I remember doing that with DS1 thinking it would help and instead I got mastitis. I just couldn't remember if it went away on its own (the all day rock hard and sore) or if there was something else I needed to be doing.

  • Hot shower helped my breasts feel so much better. I've also been on Motrin around the clock.

  • Try a warm compress for 5-10 minutes before each feed ... Ice pack for 20 minutes after each feed ... Recommended by my lactation consultant ... Engorgement was resolved in a day!
  • My lc recommended icing breasts with a bag if frozen veggies (I didn't have ice packs). She also said if I tried heat not to do it longer than 20 min since it can make swelling worse.
  • Hot showers, warm towels before each feeding.

  • I pumped just enough to take the edge off, used ice, and it cleared up in a couple of days.

I pumped enough for relief (freezer stash started too!) and it helped a bunch just took several days for it to even out!

This. Too much heat will make you swell more.

  • I second (and third) what others have said aboutjeat relief. Just last night I wet a face cloth with hot water in my bathroom before bed and laid it over my breasts while I was brushing my teeth. It was heaven.

DD is the same. In the middle of the night she will empty one side and I pump the other. I still wake up hard but it's not as bad AND I have a nice freezer stash.
