Moving beyond a high chair?

Hi Ladies I don't think we are quite there yet but I am interested at what ages your LOs moved to just sitting in an adult chair at the dinner table? We have one of the high chairs that just attaches to the regular chair and he's still fine in that but he is getting interested in just sitting in an adult chair... Only draw back right now is he is still a bit short to eat comfortably and he hasn't yet mastered climbing down safely. Question is more just out of interest than anything else. Thanks!

Re: Moving beyond a high chair?

  • So we have just started the transition at home and DS will be 3 this July. Honestly, it's so nice to have him strapped to the seat haha! The most difficult thing is getting him to sit in his seat the whole time to finish his food. DS is tall and he usually has to sit on his knees to comfortably reach his food. I think I'd keep him in a high chair or strapped in a booster seat as long as I could but with another on the way soon we decided no better time to transition than now.

  • M is 18m and he's still in his high chair!  We have the IKEA one that pulls up close to the dining table.  He hasn't complained about it yet.  Next step I think we will switch to the booster chair, but I'd like to keep him in the highchair for as long as possible b/c he's strapped in and the highchair is a breeze to clean.

One of our friends's son (same age as M) has been fighting his high chair for the longest time, so they caved in and let him eat his meals at his little table/chair set.  Biggest mistake ever!  Their son now refuses to go near the high chair and demands to eat at his table for every meal. The problem is, he is free to roam around so he smears food all over the place, and then he brings his toys over to the table and sticks them in the food.  My friend is getting so frustrated over this.  I told her I'll let her borrow our booster chair to see if that will work...

  • We have the OXO sprout chairs, which allows you to take out the leg divider to make it more like a regular chair (with straps). We will probably transition to that after their second bday. It definitely won't happen for several months, as one of the boys lost plate privileges for throwing. Every time we put it on his tray, it goes flying through the air! We also have issues with throwing food, so we need to be able to remove the tray. So, until we get some of these behavioral issues under control, we will definitely still use high chairs!! I don't see us using real chairs for quite some time, as the boys are in the 3rd percentile for height and won't be able to reach for years!

  • DS is almost 2 and still in the high chair, he likes "his chair" and hasn't fought us about it yet, so I just let him stay in it. Its a Chicco that can adjust in height and put the arms up so it can pull up to the table which we do sometimes. When he sits in a regular chair he gets up and down too many times, hes just a busy guy! So I like when I can strap him in the high chair and he sits still!

DS is still in a highchair and I have no plans on moving him to a booster anytime soon.  He rarely puts up a fight in his highchair.

  • Ds is almost 3 and is pretty laid back. He will still use his high chair but does prefer a booster seat at the table. I ordered the turtle one from amazon is was like $12. It doesn't really adjust or anything but does have a seat belt. He likes it, plus it's super easy to clean

  • Grayson will be two at the end of July and he is still in his high chair at home. At school, he sits at a little table with his classmates, but he is too busy to sit still at home without something holding him in. We sit at our counter top for meals so I am thinking about trying a booster seat that straps onto our counter stool seats.

Thanks everyone. I let him eat snack at the table yesterday and he loved it. But I think his good behaviour was partly the novelty of it. I will carry on with the high chair for now. :)
