Thumb sucking= extra germs

I have twin 22 month olds. One sucks her thumb and is constantly catching something. Last month she was even hospitalized with a virus and pneumonia. Last week cocksackie, this week strep and crup. This has been the worst year with calling out of work and the illnesses. I feel like if she didn't suck her thumb it would be better. My ped says not until 4 do I rear her if this. Anyone else have this problem? We are keeping them home this summer but I truly hope next school year daycare will be better an their immunities are built up.

I never dealt with a finger sucker. So is 2 too young to try to wean her off it? Like if you put band aids on it?

  • According to my ped it's cruel as it's her comfort, she said 4. We are going to work on saying fingers out if your mouth this summer.
  • My 3 year sucks her thumb and she's one of the healthiest kids I know. I wouldn't blame getting sick on thumb sucking.

I think at 2, you can start to talk about not sucking your thumb in public, that it's just for home and nap time, bedtime, etc. we do that.

  • I agree with a lot of what PP said. I was a major thumb sucker growing up but was not sick often. Like PP said you can work on only sucking at sleep time and maybe washing hands more often?
