How about time - would you be working about the same hours at the new school? Any noticeable difference in your commute? Other quality of life factors in play?

I have left so many jobs in my career and the best thing I took with me from each (other than experience) is my friends -- I am still in touch with women that I met 14 years ago at my first job out of college.  We have a really wonderful bond.  I can go years without seeing them and we pick right back up where we left off.

YOu can't count on "possible" raises -- make the decision based on what you know today.  $3K spread out over the course of a year is not that much -- spread out over the course of a career is even less.

You'll get a diverse set of experiences moving from public to private.

If you hate it, you can look for another job.

My vote goes towards TAKE THE JOB!

Don't worry / wonder about it being the right decision -- go MAKE it be the right decision.

  • @kate_c The hours would be pretty much the same. It's maybe 5 minutes further than my current school, which is only 5 minutes from my house. So all of that is pretty negligible!

  • You sound exhausted over your current job. Personally, an extra $3000 dollars a year is absolutely not worth it. $7000 is a little different but that is only IF the raise takes effect in the public school system. I say take the new job, there's no saying that if you don't like it you won't be able to go back to public school teaching, but this may be the breath of fresh air you needed. Good luck!

  • I switched teaching jobs and took a huge pay decrease; however, it brought me to my hometown where all our family lives. If I were in your shoes and the jobs were in the same town, I would not switch. I'd try to figure out what I could do to make my current job better. That's just me, though! If it was a pay increase, I would leave. $3,000, and possibly $7,000, a year is a lot when you look at a career of teaching. Also look at both pay schedules and see what it would mean five or ten years down the road. It's not necessarily $3,000 times five years. KWIM?

I too am a teacher and I recently had to make a similar decision. Current school: will gain tenure this year, raise for second masters degree, horrible children, very little parental or administrative support, get to work later, good friends New school: strict principal, earlier hours so I will get off earlier, no money for second masters, more ability to go into administration, pay about the same, no friends, no actual classroom or students-I will just work with students in my caseload which is a positive, being on probation for the next three years I chose the new job. I know what I'm getting with the old job and the principal being in a position to help me try into administration. It's scary and going to be hard, but I will die if I stay where I am. Good luck!!

Best decision career and family wise I ever made was to take a paycut of almost half so that I could work a normal number of hours and have a less stressful job and see my kids. I have never regretted it once in the almost five years since. Unless you can't eat or keep your house bc of the paycut I wouldn't think about the money. I would think about what is mentally and emotionally best for you. I voted take the new job.
Grace, this is great advice and I'M glad I read it.  We're having lots of heart to heart talks over here about my job/career and what the right next move will be once #2 arrives.  Tough stuff.

I haven't seen what is making you unhappy at your public school job....is it the kids? Admin? School environment or colleagues? Would those things for sure improve at the new place?

I went from a private to public high school....I LOVED teaching at the private school, but making less money did make a difference after a while on a teachers salary, as other folks said.  I'm more burnt out in the public school world, but the benefits make a huge difference.  I just figure I'll retire earlier.  Not sure how it is where you live, but here our equivalent  to a pension is a pretty big deal, and our parochial schools have no pension or retirement plan.
I guess it would depend on how unhappy you are, how much you can change about your current job (is dropping to .8 time an option?), and how much your salary (now and in the future) is important in regards to your family.  I'd probably keep my same job.  Have you interviewed at the new place?  Good luck with your decision and keep us posted!

I just went back and read your other posts...are the discipline issues new or have they been ongoing for multiple years? I am not sure if the decision is right for me, but it sounds like a pretty solid good decision for you. My son goes to Catholic day care (it just happens to be close to my school where I work) and I never though I'd say it, we are so pleased with it and are planning on continuing him there. The people that work there seem so happy and satisfied with their job.

  • @cfattig I actually have really great classes this semester, but the discipline is an ongoing issue at my school as a whole, and not an issue that is going to go away. I decided to take the job. Thanks for your input!
