My LO just got her cast taken off this past Monday from when she got Botox injections. She has no strength in it what so ever. She tries to walk but she stumbles
a lot & her leg gives out. She crawling only now. Has this happen to anyone's LO after casting? Any advice?

Re: Muscle Weakness after Casting

  • What did the dr say? Could it be the spread of toxin side effect that causes weakness? How weak is LO now vs before??

  • Her physical therapist told me looks like she's scared of putting her foot down completely. From what her Dr. said she needs PT to strengthen the relaxed muscles she never used before. Hoping the AFO we are waiting on will help.

  • This is totally normal after casting. It happens with adults too. It's from muscle wasting. When the limb is in a cast it's muscles don't get used and therefore they atrophy which causes them to sometimes shrink in size and be less effective than other muscles. That whole phrase, you don't use it you loose it, think of it kinda like that. PT and time should help to strengthen those muscles back.
  • Remember that Botox relaxes the tone in the muscle.  Many kids with tone, use their tone to help them stand up.  Once that tone it gone, they have to rely on muscle activation.  A muscle that has high tone is typically weak.  Strengthening should help.  I would talk to your PT about this, they should definitely be able to explain it and teach you things to do at home to strengthen the weak muscles.
