When baby starts sleeping longer stretches...

...do I NEED to wake and pump? My dd is sleeping ~6 hour stretch at night and I am currently waking up engorged. BUT if she's been doing this consistently, will my body just adapt soon? I'm liking my sleep and hoping that there's no reason to wake + pump in order to keep supply otherwise throughout the day. Baby seems to be getting enough at all other times.

  • My LO has been sleeping 6-8 hour stretches at night for about the past week. At the beginning I would wake up super engorged and have to pump some off before feeding. However the last few nights have been better (less engorgement) so I think your body will just naturally adjust to the new feeding schedule.
  • Yeah pump only if you neeeed to for comfort and then pump as little as possible.

  • I'm glad you asked...I have been wondering this as well, although my baby isn't at long stretches yet :)
  • Your body will adjust quickly, don't pump!

  • Will daytime supply diminish as well?  Or just nighttime?
  • For the most part the girls know what they are doing, if you don't have any reason to think there is a problem trust your boobs to do what they need to do.
  • Your body can adjust to more demand at certain times of day without losing overall supply. You lose supply when demand drops over all. Babies that sleep longer at night typically make up for t during the day, and babies who are separated from mom during the day unfortunately sometimes make up for it at night!

Just pump or hand express a little bit to relieve the pain/pressure.

Alternately, if you're trying to build a freezer stash, this is a great time to do it.  I've been able to pump about 7.5 ounces in the morning, and can still regenerate enough for him to eat about an hour after.

Mine is 3wks & sleeps 7 hrs at night. Just got lucky I guess :-??
  • Ice packs are my new friend. I use them before bed and if I wake up engorged and lo is still sleeping.

I literally feel like my little one will never sleep in a long stretch and it's some kind of urban legend :-<

I read that it depends on the baby's weight.  Most can't start sleeping longer stretches until they're 11-13 pounds.  Ours is about 12 pounds and just started sleeping 6-hour stretches this week.   So those of us that had Thanksgiving Turkeys for babies have a head start on sleeping through the night :-)

The only time I've pumped in the middle of the night is when I'm leaking and in pain. If I'm not then I just wait until he wakes up.

My little chunky butt is almost 10 pounds so hopefully I'll be there soon! In the meantime loving those healthy rolls :)

Hah, mine's 11lbs and she still only sleeps 4 hours on average as her longest stretch (9ish to 1ish). I'm going to move to EPing, though, so I hope she'll sleep longer after a bottle. She is a lazy nurser and puts herself to sleep before she's full, so after 2:30am or so she's up every couple of hours.
