Late "bed time"

....I'm reading all of these sleep threads and wondering if I'm the only one...

DD is with us in the living room until ~10:30/11 at night and goes down when we do. Otherwise my DH wouldn't get much time with her if she went to bed at 7! Is this wrong or something??

We've been doing the same for the past week or so. I was getting her in bed around 9:30 but she decided otherwise :)

  • I'm so glad you posted this! We are in the same boat here!
  • DS goes down for his longest stretch of sleep around 1030/11pm as well. 7-11pm is his "bewitching" time so no way can I get him down earlier. You do whatever works for you and your family and maintains your sanity ;)

  • Lo stays with us until 10-11 as well.
  • We do the same.. Once he's sleeping more regularly on a normal schedule he will go to bed earlier but I don't mind him being in the same room as us til we go to bed. We put him in the rock and play when he falls asleep so we can have time together

Exactly the same as @Jessimax‌. LO is getting one good 5-6 hour stretch, so I'd much prefer that to be from 10-3.

Yup, DD never goes down before 9 sometimes not till midnight if she doesn't take her first night nap. I figure she's only 3 wks - she sleeps when she sleeps, and we'll work on a better bedtime when she's a little older.

  • We are the same too! Bedtime is 10:30 for both of us (hubby is later) and lo passes out around 11:30-12. Until 5:30 or 6. Is up for a 20-30min feed and back out until 8:30ish. I am loving this routine and I love sleeping! The 3 of us spend our evenings together :)
  • We do the same. I love our quality family time at night. We all get ready for bed around 9:30 and eventually get to sleep around 10:30.
  • I just wrote about another thread! I don't know how people do the early bedtime!!

I do my last feeding before the "Long stretch" at 8 or 9 and the baby is in the crib by 10 for similar reasons. This is also partly why DD's bedtime is usually 9:30ish

  • For some reason I can test my post but I wanted to add that after the last feeding the baby usuall fusses until between 10-11.

I haven't had anything be consistent more then like two days in a row tho. I'm hoping by doing last feeding in the dark room at 8 or 9 it will help. Who knows.

It's whatever works for you.   We put him down at 7, and he's usually asleep by 7:30 or so.  Then I feed him again at 10 when we go to sleep, and his longest stretch is from 10-4, then again until about 6:30.   This gives H and I some time alone between 7:30 and 10 to hang out by ourselves or do whatever we need to do without worrying about watching him (like fold and put away laundry, talk about important stuff without a baby crying, etc).

But seriously, if you have something that works for you and your family, then do it and don't change it unless it stops working.  There is no right or wrong.

  • I just find that DS starts getting...weird (aka tired) if I wait any later than 8 to take him to our room. He just gets fussy, pops on and off the breast, acts uncomfortable, etc. It's overstimulation. So I try to start winding him down by 8 and he falls asleep by 9. My toddler is asleep by 7 so eventually I want them both asleep early so DH and I get our evenings back.

Just do what works! If your baby seems happy, it's fine she's awake. If she is fussy or tired, I'd try putting her to bed.

Sounds like us. Last time I tried for an earlier bed time I ended up with a fussy whiny baby until 2:30am. He tends to have a self imposed bedtime around 11-12am and flat out will not settle until around then

    Same for us.
  • Same boat here. Our bathroom upstairs is under renovation (pretty much non-exsistant) so we spend as much time as we can on the first floor so we can use the bathroom, warm up bottles, watch TV, etc.

So for the past month LO and I slept in the living room together and really there was no "bed time". I just got a mini fridge and bottle warmer for LO's room (I FF) so last night DD slept in her RnP and I slept on the pullout in her room while DH slept in ours and we had a pretty good night. It also helps that the window AC we have had for a while sounds like a 747 taking off, which suits DD fine.

So we'll try again tonight around her 10/11-ish bottle to see how we do, it might be better since I think LO gets very overstimulated while being near everything (TV/lights/kitchen).
  • Glad to know we are not the only ones! Average bedtime is around 10:30! I don't have to go back to work till July 28, so I'm not going to push for an earlier bedtime until a few weeks before that.
  • I usually give her a bath and put her in pjs around 6:30 or 7 and then we have family time until 9:30 when she passes out that way my husband gets some time with her. She will stay in the living room with us until we go to be around 11.
  • DS stays downstairs with us until we go to bed around 10:30.

I'll start a bedtime routine when he gets into a more firm sleeping pattern.

  • DS bedtime was between 10:30-11 until he turned 7w. Each night it seems that he goes to bed earlier.
  • For those of you whose LOs go to bed at 10-11, do they stay with you until that time type thing? I'm wondering if I should just keep DS in the living room with us until WE actually head up to bed, instead of putting him down in his crib at 8. He wakes up anywhere between 12:30-3 am so I never know what to do! We don't stay up past 11 usually so I guess the crib is probably the best place.

Yeah we just have her in the living room with us until it's time for her "before bed" feeding, which is usually between 10-11. And then we are upstairs and in bed for the night too.

I guess I just was thinking that the idea of a 7 or 8pm "bed time" with our LO made sense yet becuase my DH gets home from work, has to do some work at home, and then wants to spend some decent time with her. So a 7pm bed time would mean no daddy time!

When she's older, "trainable", or just becomes more annoying (kidding! Kind of)... Then we think an early bed time will make sense.
