allergies, cold or reflux?

DS is one month old today. He is EBF. He slept a lot yesterday so was up more in the night and seems back to normal schedule today.  Yesterday more towards afternoon/evening I noticed he became congested sounding. And spitting up more..I dont see any boogers and in middle of night used nasal aspirator and got a little just on one side. There is a little clear discharge but very minimal. He doesnt feel warm. Seems ok, looks ok, normal BM and wet diapers. I have noticed he sounds more congested in middle of night for some reason.. he sleeps in rock n play right next to me.  We were outside a lot yesterday and have been sleeping with windows open.  He is also coughing a little more than the like one to two dry coughs per day.  I am trying to keep track but I think he sounds more congested after I nurse him..so it makes me think it may be reflux. but why all of a sudden? could it have been something I ate? how long do I wait to bring him in if it is reflux and he does need like a zantac? I dont feel the need to rush him to be seen today but will see how he is tomorrow and go from there.

Did you call your pedi? They will usually have a nurse call you back and triage.

My LO is getting over a cold and it did start as some mild nasal congestion. Don't use the aspiratior too often as it can cause some inflammation.

My pedi said my 2.5 week old was too young for allergies.

    I don't know about reflux.

If you are concerned then you need to call your pedi. You know your baby's normal.

  • LO has refux and I noticed bc of a cough. It was like 2 dry coughs in a row and only happened after he ate.

  • DD gets congested wheel her reflux really flares up. The first time, I thought it was a cold, but I've noticed a pattern. But, I'm not a doctor. It's worth a call.

has your LO been diagnosed with reflux? taking any meds? I think I am going to see how he is tonight and tomorrow

  • She has been diagnosed. She's on zantac twice daily. As long as she has her meds she's the happiest little baby. If her dose is late, she's a screaming, sobbing, projectile puking mess. It's when she coughs and gags and makes a sour face that her nose gets congested. Or if she had a very big vomit.

yes he sometimes makes that sour face and sometimes gags..so yea just recently doing those things more and congestion and spitting up more. happy baby though especially the past few days..should I wait a couple days and see or do you think I should take him in in the near future?

  • Could the vitamin d drops cause reflux?

  • I would take him in the near future, because it might be something else. He could be gagging on snot due to a cold, abd you wouldn't want to miss an illness this early. Doctors understand new parents. Usually they won't medicate for reflux unless the baby is obviously miserable or not gaining weight.

Honestly, even after having her diagnosed abd medicine prescribed it took the horrid nights of note sleep abd her puking straight bile on me before I gave her the medicine. They can't tell you if they are having adverse reactions, abd out made me nervous. Luckily, we quickly had a drastic turn around.

Not the first couple days. I mentioned it at her first pedi appointment and of course she didn't do it the entire time we were there.

This sounds a lot like my DS who is 5 weeks old tomorrow. I've also been concerned with reflux the last few days but he doesn't necessarily seem overly fussy. I don't think its a cold because like you said, the congestion and random coughs are only after nursing. I had called the ped about the cough a few days ago and asked about reflux and the nurse said if it was, he'd be very fussy when eating and it would be very difficult for him. For those with babies with reflux, do they have difficulty while eating or does it happen after?

  • I believe my LO has reflux and I've asked the pedi twice about it and he says no. DD is a good eater, does all the functions - poops, pees, burps, farts but is extremely fussy. She spits up now and then and tends to have "wet" burps. She also does a lot of gurgling, throat clearing, wheezing and grunting. I can also hear her smacking her tongue around in her mouth when she doesn't eat.

Pedi says it's colic, but I think it's more. She wants to eat every 2 hours like clockwork and if I'm late warming up a bottle she screams bloody murder....Have any of you been through this with your pedi??? I just want to try reflux meds to see if it even helps.
