Pregnant after 35

Gaining too much weight already uggh

I am sorry but I have to rant. I had lost about 45lbs last year before I found out I was pregnant. I am 5ft 3in and was down to 172lbs. I have struggled with my weight for most of my life. I was on a low carb Atkins diet and it seemed to really work for me with moderate exercise. Since January I have been adding carbs here and there but tried to stay on plan. I have laxed on my workouts as well. At the end of April I found out I was pregnant, about just over 4 weeks. I had already gained about 13lbs back. I have been so tired that I never got back on to exercising. My first appt in June 4th so I was waiting to go back to exercising. I just weighed myself today, granted it was not first thing before I ate, and I gained another 10lbs. I just don't what I am going to do other than go back to limiting carbs and eating healthy vegetables and lean protein. I can't believe I have gained so much weight already. I have no ms so I am sorry if you are going through it and I really should just be thankful I can eat. I just need to get control of this otherwise I am going to have a miserable time and pregnancy. Thanks for listening.

  • I hope your doctor/midwife can help you make a plan.  I don't want to gain a pile of weight with this pregnancy, either....   And that is totally possible.  (Not much fun!  but possible.  ;)   )

  • Hardcore Atkins isn't a good idea right now....

But lots of non-starchy vegetables, lean protein, some good fats, a bit of fruit, and even some healthy grains (like quinoa) all sound reasonable to me.  You can do it!

  • I know how frustrating and out of control it can feel.  I gained about six pounds the week I conceived and then another two in the weeks after.  I was totally freaked out at how rapidly I was gaining weight, but after week 4 , my weight has stayed steady at the 8 pound weight gain (I'm at 9 weeks now).    I think for me, my body just needed that extra weight initially.  And a lot of it is water!

Also, its possible you have a corpus luteal cyst and that could account for some of the weight. I am not diagnosing you, lol, just pointing out a possibility :)

One thing that helped me was to go to a nutritionist to talk about how many calories I was consuming and what my body needed for pregnancy.  My midwife wasn't much help, but hopefully yours will be.

    Hang in there.

  • I feel like I put on weight quick in the beginning and was also worried. It seemed to steady off a bit once I got rid of initial exhaustion and lack of motivation. I am now averaging a pound a week give or take. Its more than I wanted to gain with a second pregnancy but I am glad its gotten better. Hopefully it will for you too. I think its so easy to cave into carbs, at least thats how I feel.

Thanks! I just need a little motivation to exercise too. I have a little more energy so I am going to start some short walks.
