Anyone else with a tiny baby?

I know that because DS2 was born early that he is likely to be smaller than his same age peers for awhile, but he also seems so tiny even compared to the A14 babies!  He was 5lbs 8oz/18.75" when he was born on 2/26 and is just now up to 8lbs 15oz/20.5".  I see so many people talking about their kids being in 6 month clothes and size 2 or 3 diapers when they're 6 weeks old, and my little guy is still in newborn everything and nowhere near ready to move into even 0-3 or size 1s.   My older son was (and is) small too- he's 19 months, 24.5 lbs/31" (6lbs 15oz and 20.25" at birth)  and still in 12 month clothes (some 18 month pants for length) and literally just moved to size 4s yesterday.   Our pedi doesn't seem concerned but I can't help but wonder if its something we aren't doing right.  My older son was EBF until 9 months and nursed regularly until 14 months and my 2nd has been BF since day 1 with some formula supplementation due to a milk allergy and now because of low supply.  Both boys have casein allergies so maybe its because we can't have milk and aren't dealing with the hormones?

Anyone else have little babies or have experience with smaller than average kids?

Re: Anyone else with a tiny baby?

  • If your pedi isn't concerned I would t be concerned

Every kid is going to grow differently. As long as they continue to grow And have plenty of wet and dirty diapers and seem happy then I wouldn't be concerned.

  • What is Benjamin's adjusted age? I think, at 8 lbs. 15 oz and 20+", he's just the right size for an A14 baby. If he was due at the end of April, those measurements seem pretty average. I am one with a big baby, so I keep thinking he's too big. As long as your doctor isn't concerned, and Benjamin is healthy, it should be okay to believe that he's perfectly fine.

  • My LO is still in newborns (mostly) at 5 weeks. He is just petite, even the doc commented on how petite he was. He's about 10lbs but still on the smaller side.
  • Meh, Penny is 5 and a half weeks old. Went 9 days past her due date and is only about 8 and a half pounds now. She was 6 pounds 13 oz at birth. She's a bit too long for newborn sleepers because her feet are so long but I've got her fitting in newborn pants and onesies still. And NB diapers. I'm going to just finish off the 20 diapers I have and then move up to the next size.
Doesn't seem odd to me that he's small!

  • Honestly, I think some people jump the gun on putting their babies in bigger clothes/diapers. My baby girl is 5 weeks, somewhere around 10.5 pounds and probably around 24" now, and she's still in newborn clothes and barely got into size 1's within the past week which are pretty big on her. As long as your son is gaining weight and eating well, I wouldn't worry. Don't compare to other babies. Each one is different. :)

Also it is heavily dependant on brand of diaper and clothes as to what you put them in.
DS is 8 lb and in size 1 luvs because the nb size was sooo tiny. And still in nb/0-3 clothes. DD at 2 yrs and 24 lb wears a range of 2t to 4t depending on brand.

  • How big are you and your husband? Genetics are definitely going to play a role. I'm short and DH is big and tall, our kids are just bigger than average on the growth charts which makes sense. DS is 5 weeks and just over 10lbs, he's in 0-3 sleepers for length but fits in nb onesies and pants, we moved to size 1s because he was having blow outs. DS1 was born at 29 weeks so he was in newborn everything for weeks after coming home, felt like he'd never be "big" but now he's in 3T at 2.5yo. It just takes time!

My girls are almost 8 weeks and are 7.2 and 7.10 pounds. They were born 4.3 and 4.7 - 4 weeks early. They are fed a combo of formula and breast milk.

Pediatrician says they are doing great. They are still in all newborn stuff.

  • I was induced at 41 weeks and my LO was born at 5lbs 14oz. I tried breastfeeding, but had to end up supplementing because he got down to 5lbs 4oz. I cried a bunch thinking something was wrong with him, but he has grown so much since then. He is 3 weeks 4 days now and weighs 8lbs 8oz. I now just formula feed because my supply wasn't great. I pumped 12 times a day and nursed before every feeding the first two weeks, but would only get an ounce a day from the pumping sessions so we decided that formula was best for our family.

  • We are going to be 6 weeks on Wednesday (5/28) and are just now getting snug in our newborn clothes. Still wearing newborn diapers though. Born 4/16 at 6 lbs. 11 oz. and came home at 6 lbs. 2 oz. At 5 weeks 1 day he weighed in at 8 lbs. 12 oz. and our pedi was thrilled!

I sort of love having a little peanut!

I thought maybe it was genetics, except it means my boys got nothing from my husband, haha.  They already look a lot more like me than him, and he is 6'4 180, while I'm 5'3 110.

  • Emma is almost 7 weeks and is about 8 or 9 lbs. she is still in NB diapers, but NB clothes are getting too small.

  • DD was on time but still was only 5 lbs at birth, when we were released from the hospital 2 days later she was 4 lbs 12 oz. She's 4 weeks and 2 days and she still is in newborns and most are are still pretty big on her.
  • Sounds like they're just small, which is to be expected given how premature he was. It's not hormones in milk making everyone else's babies giant, that's for sure.

  • I have a small lo too. He was 6lbs 8oz at birth, 18.5 inch. I was a week early (so term technically). He is also bf exclusively, and also has a diary intolerance. The latter impacted his weight gain as it took us a few weeks to figure out what the issue was. He's now just about 8 weeks, about 9 lbs but he's grown length wise quite a bit (22 inches). I'm also very small (5ft, 100lbs) and we were not expecting a big baby! Our ped is not concerned at all. He's growing and eating well (gaining 36g/day so he's making up for lost time!). I would only be concerned if your lo isn't meeting their developmental milestones. If your ped isn't concerned then nor should you. I consider myself lucky for not having to birth a bigger baby!!! :)
  • Rebekah is 10 weeks 4 weeks corrected and weighs 9 lbs still I'm nb everything. As long as your child is having plenty of wet, dirty diapers ts, not jaundice and dr not concerned then you're doing it right.
  • Sounds exactly like my LO, also named Benjamin. He was born 2 weeks early at 5 lbs 9 oz and now at 8 weeks is 9 lbs even and 20.5 inches long. We just moved him to size 1 diapers but is still fitting nicely in NB clothes. I'm not worried. He's small but seems more alert and acts like a 7-8 week old baby. They'll catch up sooner or later
