Breastfeeding

Breast Pain

Hi ladies,

So for the last few weeks I've been suffering with a bit of breast pain.  It's mostly on my right side, on the side of the breast.  I also have some itching.

Originally I thought it was thrush (LO had some white patches that wouldn't come off), but we've done gentian violet for four days and I'm still having pain (I also washed and sterilized everything).  I don't want to continue using the GV since it's so messy and now I'm not even sure it's thrush. Plus, my husband is still convinced it's bad for the baby.

I'm trying to find a doctor to see, but there aren't a lot of people who breastfeed here (last stat said 12% after 3 months), so I'm not sure I'm going to get good advice.

Any thoughts on what else it could be?  I've been trying to focus on latch (LO has lip tie, but again no one here will likely do anything about that).  I'm getting really frustrated and not sure what to do next.

Thanks!

  • Is your breast warm to the touch or red?

Nope.  Though I almost wish it was so I'd have an answer.

  • If it is thrush, I would recommend actually treating thrush, and not using a product that is linked to mouth cancer.  Your doctor can prescribe nystatin or another antifungal, and both you and baby need to be treated.

Wow, that was really unnecessarily harsh. Many LCs recommend gentian violet.
OP, I'm sorry you are having a tough time and don't feel supported. Try to find medical professionals who support BFing, but in the meantime, try hot compresses and/or hot showers with gentle massage; ibuprofen. Have the white spots in your LO's mouth gone? If not, I'd say highly likely it's thrush and you can do a 2 weeks course of Diflucan to knock it out.
    Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I'm going to give it a couple more days on the anti fungal creams, and if not I'll from more research on doctors here.
