Getting rid of the pacifier.

I have been debating on whether or not to get rid of my daughters pacifier all together. She really only uses it when she is napping or at night and when she does have it during the day she just plays with it. How do I go about taking it from her during the naps and night time. I'm afraid of her not being able to settle without it. Any suggestions would be wonderful!

Re: Getting rid of the pacifier.

  • If it were me, I'd stop letting her play with it during the day & start weaning her from it at nap times.

  • When DD turned one, we took it away during car trips.  Around 14 months we took it away during nap time (sometimes needed us to go in 1-2 times to pat her back for a minute or two, but otherwise did fine).  When she was about 15.5 months old I got sick of my own procrastination and just threw all the paci's in the garbage.  She didn't so much as bat an eye.  Once it was over with, I felt stupid for being the one that kept it going for so long!

She may not settle right away, but she'll find new ways of helping herself calm down and fall asleep.  Might just need a little extra love for a few days.  Now that I've done it, I think the sooner the better is easier for everyone involved.  Good luck!
