Worried about my SIL and Niece!

My SIL was due with her 1st on May 18th. On Friday the 23rd, her water broke around 8:00 P.M., but she wasn't sure because there was no big gush just some leaking. After changing into her third outfit, she put on a pad, and she and her husband went and saw the 10:30 showing of the x-men movie. She used the RR after the movie and her pad was wet, so they went out to L&D. When they checked her for dilation, fluid came out and they told her that her water had broken, but she was still only 1cm and 50% effaced, where she's been since 36 weeks. They admitted her, got her to a room where she stayed in bed all night, other then to use the RR, because she was having spikes of high blood pressure. As of 8:00 A.M Saturday morning, she had not progressed at all, so they started her on PIT. She's very adamant about as little medication as possible, so she was getting Nubian for pain. Again all day she wasn't aloud up because of her BP. 8:00 P.M Saturday night, they could even check her cervix because it was too high and tucked back behind baby's head. They made the decision to go ahead and give her antibiotics and give her til 8:00 A.M. This beautiful Sunday morning to have the baby or they were going to do a c-section. She text me a little after 8:00 A.M to let me know that she had finally dilated to 6cm and was pushing for a natural labor. I understand that she wants a natural labor, but I'm so worried. It's been so long since her water broke, she hasn't gotten much sleep, and she was so exhausted when we visited her last night. I'm worried about the increase for infection, because it's been so long since her water broke. I'm really praying my niece comes soon and all is well. Does anyone else have experience with this? I was told the baby had to be out within 24 hours of water breaking. T&P's are appreciated!!

  • I was induced at 37 weeks. My doctor broke my water on Monday at noon, and I didn't deliver until 10:50 on Tuesday morning. They have a time limit on how long they will let you labor... It sounds like she's doing well, and hopefully she won't need a csection!

  • I didn't think to add this little tidbit, there are 5 of us. One of our other SIL's had a long labor, the babies heart rate started to decel, so she went for an emergency c-section, by the time they got Grace out, she was gone. We also lost an 11 week old nephew at Christmas 5 years ago to SIDS. Our family has seen enough baby loss, I just don't want any more.
  • @yellowbird219 has it right. She's in a hospital being cared for by trained staff. I completely understand your concern, but they know more about what's going on and what needs to be happening than you do right now. If there's a risk to her or or baby they will tell her. She's going to have to make the calls herself once she gets the advice of her care providers. The best thing you can do for her is just continue to offer support and love.

I know someone who was leaking fluid and ended up not delivering for about 30+ hrs (maybe more) after her water was determined broken. She had pitocin, but otherwise was able to have a med-free labor and delivery, and everyone was perfect. I know it is easy to worry, but I think the 24 hr thing is a guideline, not a rule. The doctors and nurses will keep a good eye on her. You are a good SIL to be so concerned and invested, but try to not freak out for your own sake.
