Mom put a fork in name

So I REALLY felt like I was having a girl. Girl dreams, high bump, mad sweet cravings, crappy hair, etc. well nope it's a second boy. I can not think of hardly any names I like except I liked the sounds of Avery. Well at first mom was polite, then quietly said the only Avery she ever knew was an awful child. Then must've told her friends who all supposedly decided Avery is a girls name and only pick that if you want him getting beat up every day.
So opinions? Is Avery that feminine? Or Pretentious? Any other fav boy names? I don't know why I'm having such a hard time thinking of names. I seem to find a reason to dislike everything anyone here suggests.

Re: Mom put a fork in name

  • If I had a girl , Avery was one of my top names. It originated as a boys name, but I think girls have stolen it. I went to high school with an Avery and it was a guy. But I haven't met a male Avery since.
  • Loading the player...
  • I'm no help..the only Avery's I have known have been little girls.

If you like the name though, use it! :)

Other boy names. I love Henry and Hudson. Now sure what your DS's name is but I usually like to find something similar I.e. not a Victorian name and a modern name.

  • Avery seems gender-neutral to me. I know from experience that it sucks when your family doesn't just love the name you picked, but once the baby is here, they will only be able to associate the name with your baby.

If you love it, go with it.
  • Tell her she will know a wonderful Avery now - her grand child!

I think Avery is gender-neutral. And I really like that name!

  • There's a male Avery on the show Nashville. Maybe just step away from thinking about names for a few weeks and then come back to it fresh.

  • I love the name Avery. I have never heard it used as a girl's name. I don't think it's very feminine, but I could see it being neutral. If you like it, maybe give your MIL a new Avery to make opinions about. I bet your little boy will melt her heart!

  • I'm with the PP who said she names her kids - you get to name yours. Our parents don't love our choices either (not traditional enough).

It's good to hear things you may not have thought of, but Avery is a great name so if her concerns don't change your mind go with it! Give it a little time and she'll only associate it with her beautiful grandbaby.

  • I havent known any girls by the name of Avery and the only boy I can think of is the brother in Charlotte's Web... I like the name :)

  • I associate Avery with girls. I love it and would probably use it if one of my close friends didn't already.

Aside from the input from your mom, I could have written this post! I love this name but am hesitant about giving it to my son since it's been appropriated by the girls. Don't girls have enough good names? Stop taking the only boy ones I like!

  • I only know girls with the name Avery, but I know a boy named Averill.

It IS a neutral name, technically, so I say if you love it, use it! Grandma and her friends will get over themselves when they see your cute little boy.

I like it for boys or girls.  It's very popular for girls under 5.  My boys have had atleast 1-2 girls named Avery in their classes.

  • I've honestly only heard it used as a girls name but I actually like it as a boys name the more I think about it. I think boy names are hard too. One reason I'm glad our next baby is a girl.

  • Although I don't like it (too trendy) I think Avery is a boy name first.  I don't know anyone with that name but if you name your son Avery it will be a boy name...also, if we eliminated every name that has a bad association it would be impossible to name our children!

In 2013 it ranked at #12 for girls and #196 for boys. It was historically a boys' name but it's become more popular with girls. In my opinion there would be nothing wrong with using it on a boy.

Whil I like the name, having other girls in his class with the same name would be easy fuel for teasing. Kids can come up with ways to tease and bully each other over ANYTHING, but I am trying not to fuel that ability with an easy target for a name. Just something to think about! End of day it is your baby! This is why we aren't sharing our name with anyone til our baby is here.

  • ugh this is why we aren't telling anyone our chosen name. I can't stand all the family opinions. I think i've only heard it as a girls name, but I like it for your baby boy, and I think the most important thing is that you like it. As long as you give it some thought, and you come to the conclusion it's the name you want, you should go for it!.

  • I know several Averys.... All girls. I know it started as a males name but I only hear it as feminine. But personally, I think any name that ends in a vowel sound is more feminine sounding.

  • Avery is gender neutral but I always think of it as more of a girls name than a boys name. I highly doubt a boy Avery would be beat up for his name though ;)

Avery was 13 in 2013 for girls and 196 in 2013 for boys. So currently way more popular for girls but definitely not unheard of for boys.

An acquaintance named her daughter Avery and until I met her child, I always thought she had a boy! That being said, my son's name is Skyler and without fail, people always think that he's a girl. We kept our name a secret until birth and assumed that due to the spelling (and his name is mis-spelled even by family) people would know that he's a boy. While him being mistaken for a girl is annoying, we still love the name and don't regret our choice. If you love the name, you shouldn't let other people's opinions sway you.

  • I went to high school with a male Avery. He was very well liked! I thought it was a male name until my best friend named her daughter Averie. I think it works for both! In the end I'm just going to ignore it and do what I want to do because it's my daughter! Once the baby is here she's not going to care what his name is!

  • I thought about this randomly this morning and thought I'd share.

You're mom put a fork in the name? Tell your mom to put a fork in it!

See because that saying means to tell her to shut it. :) Badum-CHHHHhhhhhh
