Vacations and naps

I know a few of you have travelled at least once with your babes. What should I expect as far as naps and bedtime go?

Lately he's been extremely good at napping, but only in his crib. I haven't tried it anywhere else really.

Would you still try to stick to your babe's nap schedule while on vacation, or be a little more flexible? What about bedtime? Would you make an effort to be back to the hotel in time for your bedtime routine (ours is at 7-7:30), or would you stay out a little later since it's a vacation?

What has been your experience with this?

Re: Vacations and naps

  • I took two week-long trips with A when he was 4.5-5 months old. I did the best I could with his naps, and he got good at napping in the car and in the pack'n'play in strange places. His bedtime isn't til 9, but we still had to stretch him a bit on the few nights when we were out later.

Overall, he did fairly well. Sometimes it took a lot longer to get him to fall asleep for naps, and he did wake up more often at night (like 4x usually) but it wasn't too terrible.

Take it one day at a time. Do the best you can to keep him on schedule, but he may pleasantly surprise you! A did much better than I expected him to. Good luck!

  • We were away this weekend and just tried to sneak in naps when we could. She really hates naps on a normal basis so I'm not sure what this "nap schedule" you speak of is anyway! We did try to get her in bed around her normal time though (7). We let her stay up until 9 last night but she took a 2 hour nap in the car around 5 so she was ready to rock.

We are on a schedule at home and stuck to it like pretty closely for the trip. I was worried about him sleeping in a strange set up (pack n play at my MIL's) but he did fine. I took his white noise machine, but forgot the video monitor. Wish I would have had that so I could have hung out outside with everyone else in the evenings.

This was a 4 hour road trip, so we left at his bedtime Friday night (7 PM) and came back at his morning nap (8:30 AM) today. So he was only awake in the car about the last hour of the trip.

We fly in June and I have no clue how that's going to go except I hope he naps in his ergo.

  • We took a weekend trip over Memorial Day weekend. We stuck to the bedtime we do at home and she took naps whenever she could but we tried to stick with her usual nap routine, loosly one big one in the morning and one or two smaller ones in the afternoon/evening.
