Help!! How to get baby off the dummy

Help!!
We have given DD a dummy as advised because she was not settling unless on the breast. I had supply issues so have moved to the bottle which if she falls asleep sucking she chokes. But I fear she is now dependant on the dummy, she screams when tired until we 'plug' dummy in. I've tried swaddling and patting but she gets so distressed.
Can 6 week olds be dependent on the dummy?
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

  • Let her have it. Why would you take it away!

I would just let her keep using it at this point. She's way too young to self-soothe, so if the pacifier soothes her, then just go with it.  You can worry about taking it away when she's old enough to soothe herself.

  • I wish that there were something that actually soothed my LO. He just screams all the time!

  • You call the pacifier a "dummy"???? Is that a regional thing? I've never heard that. Usually, I hear people refer to them as "binkies"

    I think it's a British thing....

If your baby is comforted by it, then she needs it. Her life is all about comfort and soothing right now. Don't take that away from her.

That's what people call pacifiers in Britain.  We call it a "paci" because we hate "binky"  (was I was little that's what we called my blanket).

  • I've always called it a soother or a pacifier. I'm the opposite...my baby is struggling to take it and I am trying everything. My 3 year old had one everywhere until 6 months and then she just used it for naps and nighttime. By 1 year she no longer used one a all. My friends who were against soothers all have kids who suck their thumbs or fingers and they still do at age 3, 4, 5 etc. and they really struggle because they can't stop them. It's really affecting speech as well. Hopefully my baby will take a soother soon!
  • I read the whole post and had no idea what a dummy was. Anyway, I would just let your LO have it. Why not!

And my one-month-old will not take a pacifier but has figured out how to suck her thumb. I really would rather she take a pacifier than suck her thumb - definitely an easier habit to break later.

  • If it's calming your baby down, why on gods good earth would you want to get rid if it? That sounds like hell if you ask me,
