Alternatives to Diflucan for reoccurring thrush?

Long story, I'll spare y'all the deets, but I have thrush (I assume) in my left breast. I've been in discomfort for about 8 weeks now with some reprieve for the 2 weeks I was on Diflucan (thus my assumption that it's thrush). No on can really figure out what's going on, but my nipple hurts like the dickens while nursing and just hurts when I'm not nursing. My MW said she has another patient who takes Diflucan once/day for the long haul for a similar situation. My issue is that I don't have fabulous prescription coverage and it's damn expensive! I believe what I have is systemic so topical treatments don't help. MW recommended cutting out sugars and carbs, but that's not really feasible right now. Any other suggestions? BTDT?? Thanks!

Dr. Jack Newman recommends Grapefruit Seed Extract. The details are on his website. I actually emailed him because I was having problems with recurrent mastitis, and he recommended that I take GSE just in case it was yeast. I took it for 2 weeks, and it did seem to help some (no longer having nipple pain).

You have to be careful if you are taking any other medications because grapefruit can interact with a lot of medications and can be dangerous in some situations.
     Here's his website. Good luck!

  • I agree with checking out Dr. Newman's site.  But you also might consider seeing a dermatologist.  I tried everything to treat what I thought was thrush, sometimes it seemed to be getting better, sometimes worse, come to find out I actually had an intolerance to dairy.  Since cutting dairy my nipples no longer hurt and have stopped bleeding.

Not saying that's what's going on with you, just saying a dermatologist might be able to help.  Also you do not want to be on Diflucan long term.  I think they say 4-6 weeks at most.
  • Thanks ladies. It's not an allergy - it's only 1 breast affected. Neither baby is affected either. The MW said she has a patient who's been on Diflucan for a yr... No good? And I have apno, which is the same as Newman cream. It doesn't help much. I'll try grapefruit seed extract orally and see if that helps at all.

  • Yes gentian violet is good. And babies can have thrush without symptoms so you can be passing it back and forth. Also any althlets foot/toe nail fungus in anyone at your house needs to be treated. Sugar, carbs, and dairy feed yeast-white foods. So cut them. Why isn't it feasible? Adding probiotics to your diet can help. Taking oral probiotics is good also using probiotic powder and making a paste with a little water or coconut oil and apply that to your nipple. Rinse breastmilk off your nipple and don't use lanolin. Those things can feed the yeast. So the typical things that help with sore nipples can hurt with yeast.

Thanks. Not feasible to cut them entirely because I don't want to to be perfectly honest. I love BFing and wish my boob wasn't sore all the time, but I'm not looking to do a complete diet and life overhaul. I'll give gentian violet a try, but in truely don't believe it's going to help much - I'm EBFing twins who switch boobs all the time so if something's going to be passed, it would have been. That's why I'm not entirely convinced this is even thrush, but the only time in the past 8 weeks I've had any relief has been while on Diflucan so I dunno what that's about.
