Visual stimulation/development

I'm up for a 4 am feeding and googling infant development. I'm reading about high contrast, black and white toys, etc... for vision development. My LO is 4 weeks old and I do not own one single toy/thing like that. I've always heard you should have things like this, but I just don't. I feel like I'm just trying to get down the whole keeping this tiny human alive thing.

What about y'all? What are you doing as far as developmental play, etc... and how old are your babies? I'm feeling like I've wasted 4 weeks!! Ha!

  • I was thinking the same thing! But honestly, just taking care of these little humans is quite an accomplishment! We have an activity mat with things hanging from it that she loves and we just attached the mirror to it too and that's a hit! We have a couple little toys that vibrate and make noises when you squeeze them. But besides those and tummy time, that's about it!

I totally understand where you're coming from though, we just want the best for them! You're doing good momma!

  • It's really hard to remember to do everything, isn't it? Tessa is eight weeks old and we have only recently begun putting her under her activity bar. She does like it, though, and will bat the objects hanging down in front of her. I try to give her some time under her toy bar after every daytime feeding session. I only expect her to stay under there for anywhere between 5 and 15 minutes, but it's actually very sweet to watch her happily play with those toys for those short periods of time. We have some black and white elements to certain toys, but I have never worried about specifically buying high contrast monochromatic toys since this stage of development is so quick. As long as you offer your baby some small, gentle toys that won't to be too overstimulating, I'm sure s/he'll be fine.
  • I've been putting her on the play mat every day since she was a couple weeks old and she loves it. I have little toys hanging from the car seat. She also gets a lot of entertainment staring at the dark ceiling fan on the white ceiling lol! But I don't own many black and white toys, no.

@KendraColeslaw‌ - my LO loves our ceiling fan, too!! I have a feeling she's going to be a baby who "loves the box more than the toy." LOL.
  • This is our playmat and LO loves it! It has loads of black and white elements and its clear that she finds them really fascinating as she is constantly batting them around even thought she's only 5 weeks. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=baby+play+mat&client=safari&hl=en-gb&source=lnms&tbm=shop&sa=X&ei=v_CBU9r7OuOI7AbinYGACg&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=320&bih=372#spd=3184184524241432996
  • I got my playmat out yesterday but we haven't used it yet. That is definitely on the agenda for today.

We bought the playmat at about 6 weeks, but he's only just now starting to "engage" with it.  We got the Fisher Price Kick N Play with the piano keys, and it's awesome  As a bonus, our cat love it too.

We have this mat too, and I really like it. DD is not quite four weeks old, so she's largely uninterested. However, she's a baby who doesn't love to be held. We put her on the mat for some tummy time and so she can stretch out on her back. She will kick the piano keys, although she hasn't yet made the connection that she's making the music!

  • My son hates fun and toys. I layed on his playmat to try to get him interested and he screamed. He does however love lights and windows?

    This is my DS exactly!

  • My kid seems to trip out on a black and white striped shirt I wear, as well as her dad's black heavy metal tee shirts. :)

Yesterday I showed her a few old black and white photos of family, including the great-grandmas she is named after, and she seemed pretty intrigued.

She also likes anything to do with outside.  We just stand around the porch where it's shaded and point stuff out to her.
  • There's an app called infant visual stimulation. It has over 100 black/white/red images that play on a slideshow with music. LO is quite intrigued by it!

My DS as well! Although only in the past week has he actually started to enjoy the playmat. Until then he had only been interested in laying in his PnP so that he could watch the mobile or look outside.

I do play a baby Einstein video for him...not sure what he sees but he seems to respond to it because he will coo and kick his legs/move his arms at certain times throughout the video.
