Too old for the stroller?

I was fully invested in buying a nice double stroller after LO gets here, but the other day my friend was surprised that I wouldn't just reuse my single and have my son walk when we go out. DS is going to be a little under 2 1/2 around my due date, and I know it isn't super young but I tend to frequent places like the mall, public parks, downtown areas that require a lot of walking, and we go to Disney World every so many months because we only live 4 hours away (and I think it's magical there). My son is very curious and sometimes takes off running and I think it'd be too much to watch him and try to push LO around, I also think that that's too much walking for a toddler (he almost always falls asleep in the stroller) and I'm going to regret it in the long run. I fully expected him to be in the stroller until he was almost 5.

Has anyone else given this any thought? Is my opinion in the minority? Thanks, ladies!

Re: Too old for the stroller?

  • I don't think 2 1/2 is too old for the stroller. Although, I do think that a 4 or 5 year old is. My children were weaned off stroller at 3.

  • We will use a sit and stand for DD and new LO. We like to go to the zoos around us. And I walk the mall in the winter while it is cold. I plan on wearing baby as well, but I like options.

My problem with the sit and stand is that it doesn't give my older child the option to go to sleep if he needs a nap. I live about 40 miles away from anything but a Wal Mart and when we go out for the day, we're gone ALLLL day.

  • Now that I think about it, my niece just turned 2 in March, and there is no way she is too big for a stroller. I really doubt she could do the whole zoo on her feet either.

2 1/2 is not too old for a stroller! I think 4 is the cut off lol. (Of course that's just my opinion)
  • If your son is anything like my daughter, HE will decide when he is done with the stroller. In our case, she decided very young that she wanted no part of that thing and wanted to walk. We did not find her wish unreasonable and ditched the stroller. (Before 2 sometime?)

  • My son will be 26 months when baby is born. He will most definitely go in the stroller if I have both out by myself. He is pretty good about walking and holding your hand most of the time BUT he is not old enough to always follow directions and fully understand why he can't do certain things so if we are out and about right now and he stops listening or won't hold our hand he gets picked up and isn't allowed to walk anymore. Really not an option when your pushing a stroller or holding another baby already.

I don't plan on getting a double stroller though. I will wear the new baby most of the time. I wore DS 90% of the time until he was about 1 and stared protesting. If we go somewhere as a family like the zoo or aquarium DS will go in the umbrella stroller and baby will go in the jogging stroller. We typicaly use the umbrella stroller now with DS since he will alternate between sitting and walking when we go on outings. I really only use thw jogging stroller when I go on runs with him now.

  • I don't think that is too old at all! My son turned 3 in February and still goes in the stroller all of the time. He is a little but of a runner and with my 20 month old too I can't be running after him.

  • Hmm.. With my oldest we stopped using strollers at 1. With my youngest we never used one because I babywore, but I also stopped baby wearing when he was around 1 or 1 1/2. The only time we would use a stroller is when I ran with my double or if we were going to disneyland. although, at 2 1/2 we probably wouldn't get one anymore. He was pretty restless last year. Man, I'm weird, totally a minority in this group lol But yeah if you still feel the need to use one for your 2 year old. I don't see the problem. I look at my kiddo and he still looks like such a little thing!
  • I'm on the fence on this.  My daughter is 2.5 now and we definitely still use the stroller a good bit.  I was never a big baby wearer with her but I think maybe I just didn't have the right carrier and start early enough with her.  We have a leash too, but that still takes some coordination on my part which could be hard in situations with a small baby.  I think we'll definitely get a double stroller of some kind because it will definitely get used.  Just trying to figure out if it will get used enough to make it worth getting a really nice one.

  • My son just turned 3 and we still use a stroller for like, the mall, or places where we will be walking a TON. I can't chase after him and shop.

  • DD will be the same age when this LO comes. It would be way too stressful having her just walk beside me. she always tries to dart off or freaks out a lot of the time when she has to hold my hand.

I was thinking of getting a sit and stand stroller and/or keeping her in our single stroller and wearing this LO.

  • We have a double city mini and I wear that thing out for trips to zoo, mall, Disney World. Best $450 I could have spent for a stroller!! Mine are 1 yr and almost 4 yr. I honestly think my oldest will be a little sad to lose his seat after the new baby starts riding. He loves strolling-always has!
  • I use my stroller still and I have a 4 year old! I'm even debating getting a umbrella double for cheap. I have a little different situation than most people though. My daughter has had trouble eating since she was born. She CAN walk longer distances, but I work really hard counting her calories to make sure she gets enough and even drinking enough water is a challenge, I'm really trying to wean her off her feeding tube, so I choose to have her ride longer distances to save calories and so she stays a little more hydrated.
