Pedicures causing contractions? UPDATE in OP

I'm supposed to have a Mom's Afternoon Out with my church ladies group today, and we're all going for pedicures/manicures and froyo. I LOVE pedicures and really need one......but when I told a friend I was going she said to be careful. Apparently there's a pressure point between the ankle bone and heel that when massaged will cause contractions. Now if I had a normal healthy pregnancy this wouldn't concern me. But since I have a history of PTL, this does have me concerned somewhat. I'm just wondering HOW concerned I should be? Can't I just tell them I'm pregnant and not to massage there? Are pedicurists trained on pressure points so they'll know what I'm talking about; or I wonder if they'll call me a quack, LOL. I'm recovering from a cerclage last Monday, and this is my first day out of the house since then. Going to church, then home for lunch, then pedicures with my friends. I'm really not too concerned about it obviously because I still plan on going; but just wanted to get your thoughts if anyone knew anything about it. Thanks!

Update: Everything was fine! I had the pedicure and it was wonderful! I told the pedicurist that I was expecting a baby, and apparently there's a pressure point here (pointed) that will cause contractions and asked him to leave that alone. He said he would, and asked me to tell him if he did anything that was not ok. I'm glad I ended up going :) Thank you all for your comments!

I just had a pedicure Friday. I don't think I had contractions. When my husband massages my feet I fall asleep!!! Hope he doesn't get wind of that cuz I would be upset if there were no more foot massages!

  • With my daughter I was 39w3d and got a pedicure with extra massaging to try and induce labor. I went into labor that night. :) Not sure if coincidence but I was warned in our labor class about those pressure points.
I had a pedicure before that without the extra massage and was fine!
  • I just got a pedi yesterday and didn't even think of this! I was concerned about the massage chair so I turned that off. Eeeek. I felt OK afterwards but good to be aware of for next time!!!
  • I've read this is a bigger risk later on in pregnancy when your body is more ready to start contracting. You can just ask them to go easy if you are worried. I had a pedicure last weekend. It was amazing. Enjoy!

  • They'd have to really focus on pushing those pressure points. I had a pedicure last week with a kick ass foot and leg massage and I'm totally fine. I think it's more when your body is ready for labor. If you're really concerned tell them to avoid pushing those pressure points. :)

  • My husbands chiropractor had told him something about this. He had said that you were fine after 1st tri though. I had a pedi last week, then had a prenatal massage the next day. No contractions here - just lots of R&R!

  • I had a pedi/ mani last weekend and I didn't get any contractions. Although when she scrubbed the bottom of my feet I was unusually ticklish lol I did however opt out of the massage chair too much vibration for me.
  • I don't think you have anything to worry about!

  • I have had two since this pregnancy started.
  • Oh goodness, I was just about to head out to the nail salon for a good pedi. I never heard of this before, I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. Besides my little piggies need some serious attention.
  • I really don't think you have anything to worry about, but you could always just skip the pedicure.

You could always ask to skip the massage part. I've heard of this before too.

  • Just let them know you're pregnant and it shouldn't be a problem. When I was 39 weeks pregnant with my first I explicitly told them to massage the pressure point in hopes to induce labor and it didn't work. I have had pedicures regularly during all my pregnancies and haven't had any issues.

I get them every other Friday. I had actually heard this and asked my doc and he said that it can be helpful to put you into labor when you are close to your due date, but the massage at this point is not going to give you contractions.

  • Im a massage therapist and took reflexology. The pressure points for the uterus and ovaries are on the outside of your heels and theres an acupuncture point on the inside of your ankle. Ive been told to avoid those areas in pregnant women and ive massaged those areas in women to induce labor. Personally i would ask the pedicurist to avoid those areas as many of them arent trained to know these things and i just dont wanna take that chance.
