Start BFing after stopping?

I breastfeed my LO until he was about 3 1/2 weeks old. He is almost 6 weeks now. I stopped BFing because I got mastitis on one side and my supply diminished on that side. It got to the point that I could only get half on ounce on that side, but I was getting about 3 ounces on the other side. So I switched to formula exclusively (which I regret). I've been reading online about relactating if you put baby to the breast every 2-3 hours and supplement. Has anyone ever tried this or know if it works? I would love to give it a try if I can. The problem is I don't know if my supply will come back on the side I got the infection. I still get a tiny bit on the other side when I squeeze my nipple so I'm not sure how long it takes to completely dry up. I put him to the breast today and he still latches. I would appreciate any info/advice please!

Re: Start BFing after stopping?

  • I would call anLC. I'm sure it's more than possible!

  • I called the LC at the hospital I delivered yesterday, but with it being a holiday weekend I probably won't receive a response until Tuesday. Just hoping someone has done that before so I can get some advice!
  • It does work! It's a lot of effort but you can do it. Consider getting a supplemental nursing system which will let you supplement with formula while baby is at the breast, so you're still getting your breasts stimulated. You will probably need to nurse or pump every two hours around the clock, at least for awhile. Nursing is preferable. Get some more milk plus, too.

  • And supply typically falls after mastitis but bounces back in a couple of days. There's also absolutely no reason you can't feed your baby with only one breast. Your body can make plenty of milk that way.

  • I was able to express milk for over a year after I stooped BFing DS so I doubt you are dry after a few weeks. Will take some time to get it back I'm sure but definetly doable
  • Kellymom has a section on relactation, I believe. Good luck!

  • Can you contact a local la leche league lactation consultant? You can google it to find a local chapter.

Also if you're on Facebook there is a breastfeeding group that I am part of called "breastfeeding moms support group." I know that this topic has come up there that the ladies have addressed & many say that it is possible. If I can find their responses I'll copy it and put them here for you.
  • Thank you so much! That would be great!!!
