Biophysical Scan question

I have my first scan on Tuesday and understand the first part is a NST followed by an u/s. During the NST do you just lay there for a half hour or so? Did you bring a book to read? Can you drink water during it? Just trying to remember what happens as I only had one NST with DS and DH was there to entertain me!! Anything else I need to know about this?

You basically just lie there. Drinking is fine. It can be hard to get a good tracing unless you're lying almost flat so don't expect to do anything you have to sit up for.

I only had 3 before my babies were born, but yes you just lay/recline there. I either played on my phone or closed my eyes. You can drink water and if you haven't eaten recently, they may give you juice to get the babies moving. It will monitor HR and ute activity.

I only had one BPP afterwards and I honestly don't know what they were looking for. She showed me practice breaths and I got a 3D view of their faces :)

It takes hella long though. At least an hour. I was unprepared for that time suck.

My first biophysical profile is in a week and a half... But they told me it would be an hour-long appointment. They're piggybacking my OB appointments afterwards. At our hospital, they routinely give MoMs a BPP once a week, starting at 32 weeks.
  • I just lay there watching the screen. I always ask a billion questions about what I am seeing or what they are looking for. They can't always answer but sometimes they enjoy teaching you things :)
