Is this super bitchy for me to do?

I live in an apartment and my downstairs neighbor pisses me off! He has a Great Dane that barks at all hours of the day and night and the complex has a 25lb weight limit for dogs. I would NEVER say anything because I don't want an older guy to lose his dog and it's not the dogs fault.

Now that it's becoming beautiful weather he sits outside with his constantly barking dog smoking very strong weed that drifts into my place. Am I a terrible person to call the office on him? It smells so bad

Re: Is this super bitchy for me to do?

  • I would call for the reason of the weed for sure, it's not good for you and your baby to be inhaling that

I would definitely call about the weed, and maybe say "someone" has an obnoxious dog that barks. That way you aren't pointing directly at his dog, and maybe they can do/say something about keeping dogs under control?

  • If you don't want to report him to the office then I would talk to him directly. If things dont improve I would report him. Depending on the time his dog is barking you could call the police to file a noise complaint.

I would call. He's an adult and knows what he's doing. Consider this practice for the many times you'll be advocating for your LO in the future.

I agree that not pinpointing the dog on him is a good idea since you said you don't want the dog to suffer. The weed may be medical, but even if it is he should be smoking it in a location that doesn't disturb the neighbors.

  • If you have a decently cordial relationship with the guy, it would be reasonable to approach him and let him know that the smoke is bothering you. You could even pretend you don't recognize the type of smoke if that makes you uncomfortable. I always feel like people deserve a chance to correct themselves before the authorities get involved.
  • Talk to the guy directly.

  • I would call about the weed, but me personally...I'd probably be extremely passive aggressive about it. Just say "someone" has a dog barking and their apartment smells like weed.

  • I would try to talk to him or leave him a note in his mailbox. Maybe even anonymously if you're more comfortable.

If I received any complaints from a neighbor I know I'd appreciate them coming bringing it to my attention first before reporting it. Then if nothing changes, absolutely make a complaint.

  • I feel your pain, our neighbors have two yippy dogs that always howl and bark when they aren't home. Depending on your relationship with the neighbor, I'd be hesitant to approach him in person. We did this when I was just out college with unruly neighbors and it totally backfired. Someone else called the police one late loud night, and they assumed it was us! It caused unnecessary dirty looks and tension. I like the idea of an anonymous note if you want to give him a chance before reporting but others are right... In the end, we are adults and he obviously knows the regulations. And a Great Dane is really pushing it if your complex has a 25 lb limit, I'm surprised no one has called him out on it before.
