Furniture Wax?

Hi ladies! I'm using this long weekend to catch up on some cleaning/ home improvements. I'm redoing a coffee table with chalk paint, which I know if safe to use during pregnancy, but I don't know about the wax? Is furniture wax safe to use? I'm painting outside, and would wax outside- just not sure if I should leave to wax for DH to do.

Re: Furniture Wax?

  • Since you're doing it outside you should be fine. I would also wear gloves if you're concerned.

  • Use Johnson's over miniwax. The miniwax turns yellow over time and it stinks.

  • Are you using Annie Sloan chalk paint? I've read that the wax is not safe to use but the paint is. The wax contains a chemical that's not safe to breathe in while pregnant whether you're in a well ventilated place or not.

  • @MeganMullikin Oh Gosh - Im just seeing this...Yes, I was using the Annie Sloan chalk paint and soft wax.  I did the two coats the weekend and think Im ok, but now you have me wondering, do you know where you read the info about the wax?

  • @alliJeee - I saw this on the Annie Sloan website FAQs

    Q. Are Chalk Paint® and Soft Wax safe for use on baby cribs, etc?

    A. Absolutely! Both Chalk Paint® decorative paint and Annie Sloan Soft Wax are safe to use on furniture destined for baby and child use. However, before putting the item to use, please allow these materials to harden and cure for a period of 4 to 6 weeks. Expectant mothers should not apply Soft Wax themselves but find someone else to do so instead.

  • Oh, I wouldn't worry too much, but I know that's easy to say and not easy to do! I can't imagine that small of an exposure is really an issue.

I agree with @runningmama14.    You should be fine.    Now, if you were re-doing your entire house I would say you might want to worry.  ;)

According to my OB, chemical risks are much higher during the 1st trimester.  That's not to say that you should interact with chemicals after the 1st tri, but during the first three months is when you are at most risk.

  • @runningmama14 and @MeganMullikin  Thank you ladies!  I appreciate it :)  Im guessing you're both right and Little Lady Baby is probably fine.  I just wish I had followed my gut...Something about using the wax just didn't feel right to me at the time, which is why I originally posted.
I had taken an Annie Sloan workshop a few months back and the "stockist" said both the paint and wax were fine for pregnant women, but the smell is just so strong, I was surprised.  Lesson learned, I need to follow my instincts when it comes to this whole pregnancy thing...
