Help! Diarrhea + Diaper Rash

So I had a horrible stomach bug on Thurs and now my LO is pooping all the time. Along with that she has a bad diaper rash now and cries so much when I wipe her during changes. I have to though cause she's pooping so much. I've tried desitin and Vaseline and I always let her butt dry first before applying either. Any advice on anything else I should try? Her poor little bum :(:(
My DH has my stomach bug today now too, we are just all miserable... and out of town...ughhhhh

Re: Help! Diarrhea + Diaper Rash

  • Extra Strength Butt Paste is the only thing that cleared up G's rash when she got diherra. Within about 12 hours it was much better and then we kept up the Burt's Bee's diaper rash cream once it was clear for a couple of days just so it wouldn't flare up again.

  • Put Maalox on a cotton ball and wipe on LOs bottom with A&D or the like on top as a barrier. Baking soda in bath. As much bare bottom time as possible (we would put plastic wrap on carpet then a blanket or lap pad on top of it). Also probiotics for baby (in bottle or put in mouth or nipple right before nursing). Good luck!

Put some oatmeal and baking soda in a sock (a sock that you don't want anymore) and put it in LO's bathtub with water. Let your LO sit in there for a bit and then do some naked time.

Forgot up say...use wet washcloths instead of wipes.

  • Olive had a terrible diaper rash we couldn't heal up so the pedi had us make our own ointment: half a tube of a&d ointment, half a tube of zinc oxide, a tablespoon of neosporin, and a tablespoon of mylanta or maalox. I just mixed it up in a little storage container with a lid. It worked like a charm and cleared it up in a day!

  • The absolute best thing is nothing at all... Put down some towels and let them hang out in their birthday suit.

  • I second naked time, but the only cream that's worked for us is Balmex.

  • Also for a few days just wet paper towels instead of wipes. The chemicals in the wipes can irritate it further.

  • We use the vitamin d prescription cream from the hospital. It clears it right up!
  • Thank you ladies so much for all your suggestions! I'm trying the maalox concoction today and tomorrow until we can get home. Then it's bath time and naked baby time!
  • For homemade wipes we use bounty or viva select a size paper towels. I fold each one in thirds and fill up a wipes container. Pour 1 cup water with 1 tbsp coconut oil (if yeasty add 1-2 tbsp vinegar) over the top. After 10 minutes, flip the stack. These work really well for both my kids.
