INDUCING LABOR QUESTION

My sister is being induced tonight/ tomorrow and since I have never been I have some questions. She is being given ceradil tonight and pitocin tomorrow morning. How long could this take? I can't take the day off but I can get to her by tomorrow at 4pm. I really hope the baby isn't born until then. Is that a possibility?

  • Well it depends on how fast she progresses. I was induced, they started the cervadil at 8:30 pm and they kept it in for 12 hours. With the cervadil there is a small chance that she'll go into labor during those 12 hours. They then broke my water at 8:30 am waited an hour for me to go on my own, which I didn't, and started the pitocin at 9:30am. I didn't give birth until 8:51pm but then again everyone is different. Good luck, hope you make it in time!
  • It could take days it could take hours. It just depends!

  • I started the induction process at 11am ob a Tuesday and was only 5 cm at 2pm Wednesday (ended up with a csection). They told me it can take 24-48 hrs to really get things going.
  • I started on Tuesday at 9am and had my daughter on Thursday at 4:17am so it could be awhile!

  • They started my cytotec at 7pm. It caused regular contractions, but did not dilate or effaced me any past the 2cm abd 50% I began with. At 8am, they started my pitocin, and broke my water at 11 am. By 6:30pm, I was 10cm and 100%. I began pushing at 7, DD was born at 8:29pm. Just my experience.
  • Is she a FTM? I have been induced for both pregnancies with cervidil + pit. With DS1 it took 12 hours (first contractions until delivery, cervidil did not work) and DS2, 6 hours.
  • There is a chance cervidil can work on its own. It is a small chance. My induction took twenty hours. Once they broke my water I went from 1 cm to 9 cm in an hour and a half. Everyone is different but it can take awhile.
  • I was admitted on Thursday at 10am. Started Cervadil, then Pit. then Foley Bulb. Had my baby at 01:58am on Saturday. I was high, thick, & closed. Just like all the PPs said it totally depends.
  • It also depends on how much she has progressed so far...
  • I started on Pit since I was about a 3 and 50+ effaced. From start to finish, the process took 14 hours, but I was really only laboring for the last 5 hours. I delivered vaginally with an epidural and had a great experience as a FTM (in case your sister wants some positive stories/news going into her induction).
  • My induction only took 6.5 hours. But it was a second baby, they started with pitocin, and I was already at 2 cm/50%.

  • I had pit. around 1pm and little man arrived at 3 am
  • no input/experience.  i just wanted to pop your lovetit cherry.
  • I didn't quite have an induction, but my water slightly broke and with no progress 6 hrs later, I got Pit and was in labor for 27 hours/ pushed for 3. She could go fast or slow. Who knows. Good luck!

  • I was given cervidel at 9:30 pm Monday night. It's suppose to stay in for 12 hours then they take it out. Mine fell out at like 8am when I went to bathroom. I was progressing pretty well and they said he would be born by noon but then dr broke my water and I was then given epi then things slowed and I needed a low dose of pit. After pushing for 3 hours total his head wouldn't fit and I needed a c section and he was born at 3:38 pm. I think it depends on her body . If the cervidel works and how much pit she needs ect

  • I was induced and couldn't get past 5 cm...48 hrs later I had a csection. Everyone is different though. Best wishes to both you guys!
  • I had two inductions, only needed cytotec for both so no pit. First baby was 7.5 hours and second baby 12 hours.

From start of induction to the birth of my baby it took 48 hours. (Only 10 of those hours was the actual labor) it depends on how her body handles it

  • I wasn't technically induced because my labor had already started but I wasn't progressing so they augmented using pitocin only. I started pitocin at 8:30 PM and DS was born at 3:15 PM the next day, so about 19 hours.

  • Mine took 8 hours, my sisters took 20+. It can definitely vary.
  • I had Cervadil and Pitocin. 17 hours later I had a c-section since I wasn't progressing.
