The late confession about parking in the handicap parking spots got me thinking....

I picked SS because in bad weather I will park as close as I can get. But if it's nice I will park far away to avoid the crazies and get some extra steps in.

Depends on the day and how I feel. Good days, close to doors and/or cart return. Bad days handicap, legally. Big trips usually merit handicap because im usually limping by the time I hit frozen foods. Not fun. Not a little limp, it looks like one leg is real short/stiff/can't bear weight.

SS - I try to park somewhere near a cart return, and somewhere I can just pull through.

    1. Cart corral insures I can open my doors on one side to get the baby in the car. (I've had jerks park so close I couldn't get the baby in)

    2. Easy to return the cart.

    3. Quick getaway!

  • If it's crowded I usually park far away. I don't have the patience to drive around looking for something closer. Also when I have the girls it's nice to have lots of space to get the double stroller out and get both babies in it. I hate having to worry about other cars pulling in or out around me when I'm doing this.

  • Usually as close as possible or near the cart return.

  • I've been parking far away lately. I'd never park in a handicap spot unless I were actually handicapped and had the appropriate signage.

Story time: one day a woman with a hc sign parked in a regular spot fairly close at target. It annoyed me because there were a dozen hc spots on the other side of the row. Um why take a close spot that anyone can use you instead of one of the many open hc spots that are just as close? It just didn't make sense to me.
  • Wherever. If it's crowded I'll park in the first spot I see, usually in the back. I don't like wasting time trolling the aisles for reverse lights or stalking people on their way to their car.

  • If LO is with me, I park as close to the cart return as possible.  I don't mind parking farther out.  I'm definitely not one to drive around the parking lot until a free close spot opens or wait for a long time for someone to back up.

Like PP said, if it is summer, I try so hard to park in the shade.  Texas is hot.

  • I have an awesome minivan but I rarely go further than 3km away from where I live, so I'm usually on foot with the stroller. However, I have *never* parked in handicap and get *really* angry when I see people parking where they shouldn't be, like in handicap or with-child parking.

@kimbo1216‌ some people do that to insure that the spots go to those that really need it. I do it, but take my placard down so I dont get the weird looks. If I can park close but not take a spot so a wheelchair or other -more- disabled person can, its a good thing. If there are like 10+ spots though and more than half are open, its fair game.

What I really dont get is a car parked in handicap spot legally, someone gets out and the handicapped person stays and sits in the car. Are you kidding me? Drop the shopper off and park somewhere else.

    Drives me bonkers.

Ive been handicapped/disabled since 15, I've had a good amount of time dealing with this can you tell? Lol.

How mad are you when all the handicap spaces are legally taken AND you have your grandmas in the car that need the space or you personally need it?

Where does everyone stand on handicap restroom stalls?
First come, first serve or able-bodied persons (and those without children if that's where the changing table is) shouldn't be using them?

I would NEVER park illegally in the handicap spot. That is so wrong!

I usually park far away because in Germany parking spots are super tight and I would never get my kids in and out of the car if I were parking close to the store and there were people parking next to me.

I have noticed, though, that when we take DH's truck anywhere it doesn't matter where we  park because people will leave tons of room between their cars and it. Do they think we would slam the doors into their little bitty BMWs?! Hahahaha! It's definitely a bonus :D

And yes! Mothers with children spots are not for you, you single dude with the itty bitty car! Go park elsewhere, jerkface. There. Got that out. Thanks for reminding me of the injustice, @germanpickle!

I do this because most of the Americans with their big vehicles CANNOT park in our slots. :)

I try parking next to a grassy/tree decorative thing in the parking lot so I get extra space to take the kids out. If unavailable, I take the furthest spot with no cars around.

  • I usually park in the further spots...people waiting for you to leave to get your spot is a pet peeve of mine and I like walking, so it works...did it up to the day I went into labor while pregnant
  • I hate backing up in parking lots so I always look for a pull thru. I have a fear I will hit someone backing up. Never have just a weird fear of mine. If there is no pull thru I park far out so there are fewer people walking near me when I back up.

  • SHIT! I have to change my answer because I just remembered I have once technically illegally parked in a handicapped parking spot.

Before I get flamed, it is the story I told the other day on a randoms thread.  The other night, I came home around 6 or 6:30 p.m. and was in for the night.  I woke up the next morning and went downstairs to the apartment complex's parking lot to find a post stating that the parking spot I was in was a handicapped parking spot.  They obviously put the sign up after I was in for the night and without any notice. Then I had a note on my car demanding I move before the towed me.  (rolling eyes)

  • I like to park close , because it's easier to get in and out especially now that I have DD ... Having a HC mom and no handicapped tag ... I don't even park in the HC spots because I'm afraid to get towed. So unfortunately this makes for less trips w mom. :(

  • I park near to corrals or pretty far out. I just can't with other drivers. People who illegally park in handicap spots are terrible terrible people. I'm a special ed teacher and it just grinds my gears. One of my students mother (this girl is completely non mobile and wheelchair bound) regularly takes pictures of people parked illegally and posts it on Facebook. Twice a person has recognized the car and reamed the person out.

So, I completely forgot to add a "near shade" answer because the places I shop have very, very limited shade spots. I don't live in southern Florida, but it gets pretty hot here ...... conclusion, the builders and developers around here suck!

As for those illegal handicap spot stealers....I have just never understood why. What is like 50 or even 100 more feet. Seriously, how big are these parking lots that it makes that big of a difference to an able bodied person. Even on black Friday, where I had to park in the furthest spot available...literally, the walk took no more than three mins.....tops.
