Are these really that awesome? Ive heard that they were completely necessary and then heard the opposite! If so, I usually have 8 lb babies or so. Do you think newborn would be worth it? Or start with prefolds for NB and then small workhorses?
They are awesome. I'd recommend getting them. My LO was 8-3 at birth and gained (very) quickly. I'd say the workhorse oranges fit about two weeks longer than the prefolds did, because the "wings" give a little extra width. You could go either way I think with an 8 lb baby. My LO wore the Orange prefolds for 2 weeks maybe. She was 9-15 at two weeks old . And she's still in the yellows at two months and weighs 13-13, but we'll probably move up to red pretty soon. The GMD website has recommendations for skipping sizes if you don't want to buy every size. But I bought 4 each of orange, yellow, and red workhorses and plan to add about 6 more red when I go back to work and have money again. They really are awesome.
I agree WHs are awesome. Definitely get 4-6 of them to use ON or when you just don't feel like putting on a prefold.
We didn't start CD'ing until 6 weeks, so I can't say for sure what size I would have preferred for the NB days. I tend to like things that aren't as bulky. So I think I'd lean towards getting NBs but then selling it them when you're done to fund the yellows or reds. They hold their value really well.
My baby was 9 pounds. He's four weeks old now and still wearing orange edged fitteds and prefolds and he's not exactly busting out. The yellow edge prefolds also fit if i fold down the back. The yellow edge fitteds fit fine and honestly even early on I didn't see much difference in fit between them and the orange.
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!
I actually don't own any workhorses. We did prefolds and covers for nb, and they were awesome. I did, however, have a couple random nb fitteds, and I loved those for motn changes when I just wanted to get back to bed. This time around, I'm converting some of my prefolds to fitteds so I have more of those easy changes, but I'm definitely keeping most of them as prefolds because I use them to stuff pockets etc...
Agree with PPs, the GMD workhorses are awesome! DS wore the orange edge until he was like 12 lbs, so I would definitely start there. We ended up skipping yellow to save $$, and the reds were big for a while, but still worked fine since we just use them for night time now. He is 5 months and probably around 16+ lbs and the reds still fit great.
I am one of the ones who isn't really pro fitted. Workhorses are just a prefold that is easier to put on. I just don't think that prefold are that hard to put on, especially not enough to pay 3 times as much for a fitted.
My stash is 90% Workhorses. I love them. I don't have any advice about nb size, as I didn't CD until about 4 months. But we have been in the red edges from 5 months, and still have room to grow at 1 year! The sizes cover a really nice range.
There is really not a whole lot of difference between the newborn and small size. If you're anticipating an 8ish pounder, I think you could go strictly yellow edge and be fine. They might be a little bulky for the first few weeks, but it would be more economical to have the bigger size and be able to get more use out of them.

This is why I don't own any workhorses and instead I'm converting some of our least-favorite prefolds Overnight fitteds are a different story, but even now, I'd rather make fitteds if they're going to be used during the day.

Yes, they really are awesome. Especially for the NB period. Like ovenrack said, they contain NB poop better than a prefold b/c they have the elastic in leg holes.
I also really like them for when baby is rashy and needs to air out, I put them in a WH with no cover. Lets them get air w/o peeing on everything.
To answer your question, I think you could probably get away with smalls, but they will be bulky at first and my not get tight enough to keep poop off your covers. My twins were 6 and 7 lbs and wore the NB size until like, at least 8 weeks, so its not like you'd outgrow the NBs in 2 weeks or something. Might be worth it to get the NBs and then sell to upgrade to smalls. Either way, really.
Thanks everyone! I found a good deal on 8 nb workhorses on a fb b/s/t page so I went ahead and jumped at it! Now to just wait on August for her to get here to try. Pockets with mf insert and a trifolded prefold are working great still for my 10 month old! But I def think workhorses will work great for my nb with the thirsties covers and the few aios I have already in nb size!
