Chiropractic Care during Pregnancy

Good Afternoon Ladies,

Lately I've been having a lot of back pain and I stocked this up of me not sleeping well and being pregnant.  My OB just referred to a chiropractic that specializes in pregnancy.  When I did my research and read that women who received regular chiropractic care during their 3rd trimester, carried and delivered with more comfort. Another study concluded that with regular chiropractic adjustments mothers decreased the need for analgesics by half during their delivery.  It also revealed that new mothers who were adjusted regularly had a 24% reduction in labor time.

This all sounds wonderful but I've never been to a chiropractor before and I'm a bit nervous (I don't even pop my knuckles!)  I was curious if anyone else is using a chiropractor and are they happy with the results?  Also, what does one wear when getting adjusted?

I went last week or the week before.  The adjustment hurt more than I expected and I was sore the rest of the day, but I did feel a little better the next few days.  The chiro also gave me exercises to do at home.  I'm still kind of a skeptic but I might go back because my insurance covers it.

Oh and just wear something comfortable.  Don't wear a skirt or dress (which I did, oops).

I went for the first time yesterday and it was great! I feel much better today and I will be going every week, it's a $45 copay from my insurance so I guess I won't be getting my nails done for a few weeks!!

With my other pregnancies i did not use a chiropractor but this time since it's twins i decided that id like to try it out. My ffriend is a chiropractor so ive been going to see him weekly. Its amazing! The last 3weeks due to my schedule i haven't been able to go and honestly i feel the difference. Im so uncomfortable i can't wait until tues when i go.

  • I went last week and have another appointment Tuesday I cannot wait. Not sure about helping with labor since I didn't go with my last pregnancy but I've heard the same.

  • I went yesterday, and it is always a big help. I've had pretty bad pelvic pain since about 20 weeks and regular adjustments have lessened the pain. I also have a breached LO and my dr told me that some chiropractic techniques can help turn baby, which I hope happens!! Definitely stick with comfy clothes when you go to get adjusted! Hope it helps you!

I need to call today!! I've been typing with the idea of going back to my chiro for a while, but it's expensive, so I've not done it.

BUT, baby is transverse (still! I hoped we flipped head down, but the whole body just dropped down lower). And there are techniques in adjusting that can help open the pelvis and encourage baby flipping. Gonna call now!

I go regularly and have since I got my BFP. It has helped tremendously. I've only had one or two episodes of RLP, my low back has not hurt hardly at all and I sleep pretty well most nights. I really attribute it to regular chiro care.

I have been going every 2 weeks through most of this pregnancy. I generally have my upper back adjusted as well as my hips and neck. I have also been given different exercises to do as the pregnancy progressed....now I'm doing hip and groin stretches. I feel it has really helped and really notice the increased level of blood flow to my face and extremities after a visit. I usuall just wear what I would to work out in, so comfortable stretchy bottoms and a tank.
  • I highly recommend. It has helped me tremendously. I go once or twice a week depending on how I feel. I was nervous at first but it isn't a big deal at all. Not like knuckle cracking. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

I started going to the chiropractor when I started having horrible sciatic pain. I think I have been going for eight weeks now and I have greatly improved. She is a little different and does not do the popping adjustments. She does more subtle adjustments and I am not sore at all afterwards. She suggested I see a massage therapist as well. I alternate between the two. It's worth the money since I can move and still work.

I've gone for a long time due to headaches and some back issues but didn't see one during my first pregnancy. Because of pelvic pain/psd this time it has been incredibly helpful to see one. Definitely go!

I started going a few weeks ago and it has really helped. I still have pain when I work but at least it isn't taking me days upon days to recoup.

  • Before 28 weeks I had never been to a chiropractor and I also hate cracking knuckles, or when people crack their necks, etc. However, I had been having terrible low back pain and pubic symphysis pain and I was willing to try anything. The adjustments have worked like gangbusters. I feel so much better. Although for the first two appointments I did ask that he adjust my neck with the tool instead of his hands (bc cracking necks freak me out) but then as I got more comfortable with the process I just let him adjust my neck with his hands. Just be honest with the chiro and relax through the adjustments.

  • I went yesterday! My insurance covers a 15 minute massage and adjustment with the copay so I get a massage every couple of visits. I have been going since before I found out I was pregnant. DH suggested I go when we first got together and I have been going every since. Originally I went for my upper back because of a previous injury. I always wear pants and a top, no dresses because like PPs said they do all kinds of adjustment and dresses/skirts don't work well.

  • I have been having really bad pelvic bone pain and my OB recommended a chiropractor who specializes in pregnant women and also an acupunurist, I have yet to make an appointment for either. I have this strange fear of a chiropractor but I am interested but also a little skeptical

My hip/back/pelvic problems were a bit beyond what a chiropractor was able to do for me, so I started seeing an osteopathic pain management specialist. They do the same adjustments as a chiro, plus muscle/ligament/tendon manipulation. I still have bad days, but it's nowhere near the excruciating pain I was in round the clock prior to going.

  • I went this week because of sciatic pain and it helped a lot! I only wish I had gone sooner. Highly recommend it.
  • I've had 2 visits now in the last couple of weeks. I'm seeing someone who specialized in prenatal and certified in the Webster technique. She's pretty confident she can help baby get in the proper position over the next few weeks. I do feel better but the neck cracking freaks me out a little. The first time she did it it hurt more than I expected. The second visit it really wasn't bad at all. I was a bit sore after the first visit but no problems after the 2nd. Looking forward to next week now.

  • I've been adjusted since I was 9yrs old. My mom is a chiropractor and I work in her office as her office manager/biller.

Going to a chiropractor has so many benefits especially while pregnant. I would highly suggest seeing one. You can always ask for adjustments to be done with an activator rather than manual adjustments. That way you aren't really feeling the "crack" as people put it. Most chiropractors use activators.

I am a huge fan of being adjusted while pregnant. I got usually once a week to every two weeks. It helps keep my lower back moving and I feel like I waddle less.

Let us know how your first visit went :)

  • I've never been to one, but I've been seriously considering it the last few weeks. My back has been killing me and I don't know if I can handle it for another two months. I had a lot of back pain in the third trimester with DS and it started much earlier this time. Plus I have a lot of pain in my hips too. I just need to call my insurance company and see if they cover it. Hearing all these positive stories makes me want to run out to one right now.

  • I saw one towards the end of my pregnancy with my son. I have been going regularly with this pregnancy since beginning of second tri. I still have hip and pelvic pain. But it has stabilized and I can continue to work my 12 hr floor shifts that are incredibly hard on my body. My chiro also specializes in the Webster technique. I am hoping to do a vbac so this is another part of my motivation for going.

I have gone to my chiro throughout my first pregnancy as well as this one. Due to the way I'm carrying this baby, I have been going weekly since about 20 weeks. I will continue to go weekly until I deliver and then should be able to go back to my every 4-6 weeks.

My kids also see the chiro about every 4-6 weeks. It helps with ear infections and common colds.

I have been going for over 2 years. I first started going because I was told it would help me get pregnant (which I had been trying to do for over a year). After the first 2 adjustments I was pretty sore and was told that was normal since my body wasn't use to the alignment. Since I've started going I have been less sick, have had little headaches, sinus issues and back pain. Now that I've been pregnant I have been going every two weeks. A few days before my appointment I can start feeling some pain in my back and can't wait to be adjusted. I feel like a new person afterwards. I haven't had any heartburn during my pregnancy either. I have heard that getting aligned while pregnant and right before going into labor really does help your labor go smoother. My chiropractor also comes to the hospital and aligns the baby after birth to get the baby off to the right track.

I saw one regularly with DD1, but haven't this time simply because I can't afford the co-pays. I can tell a HUGE difference between the two pregnancies...this one being MUCH harder on me, physically.

With DD1, my DH's cousin was my chiro. He actually adjusted DD within a few days of being born. No cracking or crazy manipulating. Just some gentle pressure to put everything in it's place. (Think of how contorted they are in there!) she's always been super healthy, with hardly any illness and no ear infections. He's moved out of state recently, and I'm kinda bummed DD2 won't have the same treatment.

  • I've been going for two months, I've got that pubis symphysis thing and lower back pain. The chiropractor is very highly qualified, he went with the amreican wrestling team to the last Olympics. Glad it's worked for you ladies, but I haven't felt any benefit. It just isn't helping me at all, going today but not going to bother for the last month and a half. Can't afford it.
