36 Week Planned C-Section...Mom is a little concerned.

I have been high risk from the get go having an inverted T scar on my uterus due to my first pregnancy's delivery of triplets. I face the possibility of a uterine rupture since this is my third c-section. In other words, it is a BAD thing for my uterus to contract. The LO has to be taken before I go into labor.

Preterm labor problems developed at 16 weeks. At 27w1d I had a small stay in the hospital (3 days) due to preterm Labor, then again at 30w1d and finally again at 30w6d. I have been taking Procardia to help stop the contractions.

Thursday I went in for my weekly cervical scan and BPP. Baby was weighing in at 4lb. 1oz. Cervical length is still good. However, my OB explained the LO has to be taken before 37 weeks (my goal). He agreed to 36w4d and would not extend it a day more.

I explained my experience with premie babies (triplets born at 27w3d), and how I want to make every effort to keep this baby out of NICU and take it home with me when I leave the hospital. He still wouldn't budge. The risk is too great he said.

So I am wondering (knowing there are nurses out there)have any of you had a LO at 36 weeks or know of someone who has and everything turned out healthy. No feeding or breathing problems?

Our LO gave us a thumbs up Thursday maybe to suggest all will be alright.

  • My friend had her daughter at 36 weeks due to pre-e. The baby had to stay in the NICU due to low blood sugar, otherwise she would have been able to go home immediately.

We recently had a friend deliver twins at 36 weeks, they went home with mom perfectly healthy. As long as baby doesn't have any major health issues then you should all go home together. Hopefully LO will be ready to come at 36+4 and you can take LO home when you go!

  • No advice, but I will be thinking of you. What a scary scenario! Hopefully your baby will stay put until the scheduled date and be perfectly healthy! Hang in there.
  • I know two people - one Gave birth at 35 weeks, with no time in the NICU (he was IVF, so they knew the exact conception date), and one at 36 weeks with no NICU time.

I Hope that this little one is ready! I think there are a lot of healthy babies out there that only went to 36 weeks - it isn't ideal, but everything will work out! :)

DD was born at 36w d/t preeclampsia. She was 5lbs, 4oz and she needed some oxygen that night and we spent an extra day in the hospital, but that was it. Never spent any time in NICU.

  • I had my second son at 36 weeks due to pre-e/HELLP and he never spent a day in the NICU.  Are they giving you steroids to speed LO's development? I had them to prepare as my platelets dropped and my BP went up.  He was a beautiful 7 lb 3 oz and 20 inches at 36 weeks (my MFM thinks I had undiagnosed GD).

I was given a round of steroids with the first hospital stay at 27weeks. The OB said we'll do another round of them next week.

A friend of mine I believe both babies were born around 35-36 weeks and both left with her right away.  She posts pictures all the time on fb and both look like happy, normal kids!

My friend's baby is a month old or so - born April 15th at 36 weeks. They did have a 5 day ish hospital stay, but all got to go home together and are doing very well. She was also emergency c-section due to pre-e. Hoping for the best and you can take your baby home with you!

  • A friend delivered at 35 weeks and some change and her son was perfectly healthy with no nicu time, the only reason he was there longer than a night was due to her c-section/healing time.
  • DS was born at 36+6 and had absolutely NO issues, no nicu stay, no respiratory problems, etc. Thinking and praying for you and your LO :)

  • I'm having a scheduled c section the day I turn 36 weeks for the same reason as you...too dangerous to go into labor (placental issues).

I've been really worried about how the baby will do that early, but this page has made me feel a lot better!  I thought NICU time was inevitable, and have already accepted the possibility that I might go home before baby does, but I'm appreciating this ray of hope.

My OB predicted a few days in the NICU, but maybe baby won't need it.  He's in the 80th percentile for size, so hopefully he'll be big and strong when he's born.

I just had the steroid shots at 32 weeks, so if he needs to come even earlier he'll be in better shape.

My main thing is I want to do as much skin-to-skin as possible, as soon as possible after birth, and I'm worried that they'll whisk him away to the NICU instead of letting him be with me....

  • I had my daughter at 36w4d due to pre-e/HELLP.  We didn't do steroids beforehand.  She was very small at 4 lbs, 14 oz and 17 inches, but didn't need any NICU time and came home 5 days later when I was cleared to leave.  She did have feeding problems and wasn't able to nurse effectively until 5-6 weeks.  I had to EP until then.  We also had to supplement for a day or so until my milk came in due to low blood sugar levels.  Have you considered getting a second opinion from another doctor?  I would want a second recommendation for this course of treatment before I consented to a c-section so early for a non-emergent issue.

I read an article today about mothers having skin-to-skin after a c-section. If they have to whisk your LO away to NICU for breathing issues you probably won't have the opportunity. However, the skin-to-skin helps the LO's body temperature regulate quickly as well as it's blood sugar. Research has shown they latch on quicker and easier too. I am going to ask my OB and hope it will be allowed. I realize there is a sterile zone, but I am still going to ask.

I am going to be praying for you and yours!

  • I have friends who had their baby at 36 weeks and there was no NICU at all. Wishing you good luck!

  • No experience.... But just wanted to say good luck! Your chances are great that baby will be healthy and no NICU needed at that gest age.

  • I had my 5yr old at exactly 36 weeks and 4 days. He didnt stay a day at the nicu, and was 6 lbs 15 oz. I had preterm labor at 30 weeks and recieved the steriod shots. Try and do that.

We had a momma that had the same issue as you so we did a c-section at 36 weeks and the baby had no NICU time. My brother was also taken at 36 weeks because they were very worried about uterine rupture and he was in the nursery an extra day and was able to go home with mom :)

  • DS was born at 36wk exactly. They thought he might have a breathing problem so he didn't get to stay in the room long after delivery, but everything checked out fine and he got to come back 5hrs later. We were able to prepare ahead with the steroid shots, which I feel played a huge role in his health. He didn't have to stay in the NICU and he came home in a normal time frame

One of our daughters was born just about the same time. She was seven pounds and perfect. She didn't need to stay at all.

I was born at exactly 37 weeks, and had no issues at birth. I had my son at 39 weeks and he had a NICU stay. Praying for the best :)
