Gas relief late at night?

My 11 day old seems to have really hard time pooping or letting out gas so much that she keeps herself up after our late night feelings moving around to get comfortable. During this time, she cries on and off but nothing we do will comfort her. Is there a way to help her find some relief so she can go back to sleep? Also, she sleeps swaddled and I don't know if that makes it harder for her to find relief. Should we unswaddle her until it passes? Or should we let sleep a little while in her day sleeper that holds her a little more upright (which seems to help her during the day)?

You can try rubbing her tummy or bicycling her legs. Usually when they relax they will pass the gas or poop.   I wouldn't think unswaddling would do anything.

I could have written this exactly! I don't have any solutions yet, only sympathy - we tried cycling legs etc but it didn't help us. It's awful to see them so uncomfortable.

  • I second cycling legs, as well as lots of burping and trying to keep LO elevated after feeding (a pain in th MOTN, I know). I've had her in the Rock and Play at night more for this reason. I undo the swaddle, but many swaddle blankets will let you do the arms and leave out the legs, so you can try that. Also, different positions that put gentle pressure on their tummy, like really high on your shoulder, tummy down on your leg, or sitting forward with their tummy on your hand, while rubbing their backs. These have been helpful for me. Oh, and bouncing up and down on your knee can help little bubble rise to the top too. Good luck!

  • I also use gripe water. My LO started having the same problem at 11 days old. We used it that night and the next day and night and she's been having an easier time getting her gas out now. I'm hoping to just give it to her at night now but we will see how the day goes.

  • I already use gas drops and we still have the same issue. I've noticed that heat on her tummy or tummy massage works, and she also likes her vibrating chair. I think you just have to try several different things to find what works for your baby. If nothing seems to help, call your doc.
  • I've been having the same issue.  I want to try to stay away from stuff like gripe water and gas drops because I don't want to introduce outside stuff to my lil guy but I'm almost about to get those because the stress of seeing him uncomfortable is really weighing on me (and he's not even in pain).  I have tried cycling the legs, putting them up to his chest and then doing the tummy massage (clockwise to mimic how the intestines go) but they don't seem to work that well.  I'm hoping to see if an elimination diet will help.  I might try to just start with fruits and veggies and a cup of coffee a day (I can't give up the coffee! but I can give up the rest of dairy, although I think yogurt might be helpful with probiotics?)
  • Gas drops work instantly for my LO.
  • Little Tummy gas drops, Mommy Bliss gripe water and Gerber probiotics - my baby is MUCH happier and comfortable.
