Breastfeeding

surgery, milk, supplementing

I have to have surgery 3 weeks before my little guys 1 year birthday.  I have a freezer stock but only enough for a day or so.  Do you think if I run short I can mix a little milk in a that point?  I am going to call my pedi and double check but, I thought I would see if anyone had this issue.
I will be on pain meds for a couple of days and he won't be able to nurse.  Thanks ladies!

  • I would double check with infant risk about whether the anesthesia and pain meds are compatible with breast feeding. I had a c-section and took pain meds and was able to nurse a newborn (late term preemie). That being said, our pedi gave us permission to start mixing WCM with breast milk a few weeks before DD's birthday. Good luck!

All of this.  Mamas nurse teeny tiny babies while on pain meds all the time. And, anesthesia is often out of your system within hours. Even if you are in the hospital, you should be able to pump (I was hospitalized when LO was 2 weeks.  I couldn't pump myself, but the nurses did it for me - every 2 hours during day and 3 hours at night).

There's nothing magical about being 365 days old. I'd ask pedi about permission to start the transition a tiny bit early.
    Thanks Ladies,
I spoke with pedi and she said yes supplementing a few ounces of wcm was fine.  I have a month before surgery though so I am sure I can build up a freezer stash more.

  • This is something you might not have though of so I'm throwing in my 2 cents FWIW. I had surgery when my LO was 1 month old. I was able to get a pump no problem in the ER but when I got transferred to ambulatory care, it took them hours for approval for a breast pump to be brought to that unit. That was with my surgeon, a breast specialist insisting on it, in a very breast feeding friendly hospital (they have some special designation I can't think of it's official name). So my advice, make sure in advance if possible to have a pump available and ensure your surgeon/doctor is aware of your need. For me at that time I was BF every 2 hours and the delay was a major problem.

    Goodluck with the surgery!
  • In addition to what others have said- if you do decide to go with wcm, id offer some well ahead of your surgery, in case you need to develop a backup plan. We just found out after months of our LO tolerating cheese, yogurt and butter without a problem, that she breaks out in hives when being given WCM. Within a few days of that reaction, she began reacting to all other dairy. I don't say this to scare you, but to warn you of the possibility. I would hate for you to just give her some milk the day before or something, and then find out she can't drink it.
