Those who have done dairy free

Any good resources for substitutions, recipes, and meal ideas? I had cut back (huge dairy person) but not cut it all the way out but just got the order yesterday to finish cutting it completely out. :( I was hoping to avoid the MSPI diagnosis this time but it looks like my boys are two peas in a pod.

Re: Those who have done dairy free

  • I really like the Post Punk Kitchen, it's got lots of great vegan recipes. I was dairy/meat free for a long time before getting pregnant and used this site a lot. I would make meat on the side/to add in for my husband. Veganomicon is a great cookbook too.

  • I'll check those out! Thanks!!

  • Sorry to hear that. I have to be mostly dairy free so here's my $.02 on substitutions:

Almond milk works great for drinking/cereal/in coffee, and is much tastier than soy.

Coconut milk (in cans) is terrific for making creamy soups and stovetop sauces.

I make my own salad dressings in the blender, and find that adding avocado makes for a creamy rich dressing.

For baking, coconut oil (solid at room temp) works well as a butter substitute.

Can't think of any others off the top of my head (thanks pregnancy brain) but I know there are a few other substitutions I usually make. I'll pop back on if I think of any others.

Awesome! I was already planning on getting some almond milk today so I'll add coconut milk to my list too. I found a substitute for cream of chicken which is good because I was wanting to make a pot pie for dinner.

My first had MSPI and was really sensitive, so I really couldn't have any hidden dairy or soy.  I read several things on https://www.mspimama.com/ and used several of her recipes that turned out pretty well.  (Also her web resources listing has some good links, including restaurant allergen info)

I really liked coconut ice cream when I had to have an easy dessert (also a few brownie mixes are dairy free) or chocolate almond milk when I really needed a chocolate fix.

Also, if you are interested in doing freezer cooking, I just did a Once a Month Meals cooking day to prep for Baby #2 (I cut dairy two weeks ago just in case this one has it too) - they have a dairy free monthly meal menu (it's not soy free and is combined with the gluten-free menu, but you can use real flour on the recipes that call for gluten-free substitutes).

Way back when I first had to cut dairy, the breastfeeding board had a weekly check-in for MSPI mammas, and it included lots of good recipes/links.  I haven't seen anything like that lately, but it was a great resource at the time.

    Edited to add another link.

  • Oh yeah, I second the Daiya cheese substitute recommendation by @Veganlady‌, and coconut milk or almond milk yogurt are kind of spendy but pretty satisfying substitutes for eating or cooking.

www.101cookbooks.com has some great recipes -- not always dairy free but mostly, and otherwise really easy to swap out the one or two dairy ingredients.

I had some luck finding some good recipes by doing searches on Pinterest for dairy free recipes. I had to give up most dairy with my first and all with my second.

DD1 had MSPI and DD2 is starting to show signs so I'm day four of dairy/soy free. Figure it's easier to start now and test it in a few weeks then pretend like she's not showing early signs and have bigger issues later on.

I did see that the MSPI check-in was posted on the BF board yesterday :-)

  • I know your situation is medical but know that it's a healthier choice by far! I've been dairy free for about 10 years it's awesome! I never get sick and have no allergies plus it cuts out a ton of calories you don't need. My fav website is www.ohsheglows.com. I'm not vegan so I add meat to my recipes. No one has mentions rice milk but I prefer it for cooking bc their is no taste (get plain unsweetened). Almond and coconut will always add their own taste to your recipes which can be great but not in most entrees. You can get coconut milk in cartons too it doesn't have to be cans (trader joes and whole foods have cartons). Remember you still need good bacteria so kefir is really important and 99% lactose free. Any Q's you can PM me. Good luck on you fairy free journey!

I'm sorry you have to do this again, but I wish you great success at round two.
Isa Chandra Moskowitz (the author of Veganimicon & the Post Punk Kitchen blog) has a couple vegan baking cookbooks that are amazing & foolproof. Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World is my absolute favorite, and I think I prefer them to regular cupcakes. She also doesn't tend to use a ton of crazy substitutes.

My favorite vegan yogurt is Whole Soy. Nancy's is gross, IMO. Trader Joe's has a good soy yogurt too.

Although feta is supposed to be a sheep's milk cheese, most of the ones you'll find are actually just cow milk. Trader Joe's brand makes a great all sheep milk feta in brine that didn't seem to bother my dairy intolerant daughter. I used it on pizza, salads, etc when you need some cheese, Maybe run that one by your doctor just in case. Daiya is good though. Veggie Shreds give me the most rancid farts ever.
  • Just had to cut out dairy due to my little one having issues with breast feeding. Thanks all of you for these excellent resources!!
