2nd Trimester

yeast infection & coconut oil

So, I am pretty sure I have a yeast infection. I have never had one before so I am not 100% sure, I am waiting on the results from my pap. Ugh

I was told by my MIL (awkward) that if I lube up the hubs with coconut oil and have sex that it will help to clear up the yeast infection.

Has anyone ever tried this or other natural remedies for yeast infections during pregnancy?

  • Also, I will double check with my OB before I throw anything up in my lady bits, but I was just curious what you ladies have experienced.

Monostat and OTC yeast infection medications like that are safe during pregnancy.  Why not just use something like that - it should clear it up in a day or two.

We use coconut oil for lube every time, so I don't think it could hurt. Call your OB.
  • That's quite a relationship you have with MIL, lol.
Did your doc not prescribe anything to treat the yeast infection, or at least the symptoms, in the meantime? My OB would never make me wait until results from a pap were confirmed to help ease my discomfort.

  • I never had a yeast infection before but I do work in the medical field. & I believe that you are suppose to avoid sex while having a yeast infection. It can irritate the infection & make it even worse because it puts new bacteria inside of you. As far as the coconut oil hmmmm, I've never heard of that honestly lol. I've only cooked coconut rice with it or put it on my hair & skin lol. I would just get Monostat. It is guaranteed to work & it'll work faster than anything else.
  • There are no prizes for being nasty, especially toward someone who's trying to be kind and helpful.

On the subject of yeast infections, I like AZO, it's a natural remedy found near the monistat at the store. However, I don't take anything without calling the doc.
  • Thanks, everyone. I have a good relationship with my MIL and we speak freely, but this convo took it to another level, haha. I would never do anything without asking my OB first, but I thought because coconut oil is a natural alternative that it would be worth thinking about. I certainly would feel more comfortable using something I KNOW would work, but I am curious. I will let you know what my doc says.

  • coconut oil will help, I wouldn't have sex during a yeast infection though. You and your husband will probably just pass it back and forth to each other. I would still take the diflucan once your dr prescribes it. But yes the coconut oil will help relieve the symptoms.

It terrifies me that you "work" in the medical field and you think that a yeast infection is caused by bacteria.
Yeah too bad I didn't say a yeast infection is caused by new bacteria huh? Too bad I only said that sex puts new bacteria inside of you which it does. Yeah that's too bad, nice try though Lol

Let us know if you try the coconut oil & it works. I like to go the natural route too but I think I'd use Monostat if I ever had a yeast infection. I'd just want to get it over with.

LOL you're right. Sex does make a YI worse. *TMI* I've had a minor YI and had sex w/ my fiance and it made it 10x worse immediately. It was burning, itchy, yeasty, HORRIBLE. My OB told me to never have sex during a YI cause not only will it make it worse but you can pass it back and forth to each other. I think even the monistat box tells you to avoid sex. I hope the coconut oil and sex works for OP. I wouldn't try it but it's worth a shot.
  • Alas, it is not a yeast infection. Turns out I still have BV and now I also have a UTI. It blows. I dont think I really have symptoms of either, I just feel a little off in my lady bits. Now I am on an antibiotic for the UTI and a cream for the BV. I hope it clears up soon, I hate being on so much stuff during my pregnancy.

Looks like I won't be having a pina colada scented romp with the hubs since it isn't a yeast infection, haha.
