Cord blood banking

Hi all! Just wondering if any one here has decided to bank their baby's cord blood, and if so which lab you chose? I am having a tough time selecting a lab. Thanks!

Re: Cord blood banking

  • Nope. Way too expensive.

  • I've been thinking about doing the general donation one, which I'm under the impression is free, but I think in that case, the hospital just uses whatever lab they normally go through.

  • @hampire  I did the same thing, but luckily they've only called me once so far.  I'd check with your hospital about the donation though because I know that the CBR facility is in Tucson, so I'd imagine most of the hospitals would probably do it.
  • I'm planning to, but haven't chosen a lab yet. I have my hospital tour this weekend and will ask about it then.
  • We did it for free with DD#3 since DD#1 has an immune issue. They have a sibling program were you can bank for free for 5 years if a previous child has a qualified illness. Ours is through Viacord since that is who had this program.
  • I answered this in the other one you posted...I thought I would totally do cord blood banking, but after reading this article I couldn't justify the cost. It's still very experimental and it's costly.https://articles.lucieslist.com/0-week-28-the-truth-about-cord-blood-banking

If I was to do it, CBR seemed to have the lowest over all cost, and the place that most hospitals/docs recommend around here.

  • We are doing it thru Viacord. My Dr. Had a patient who ended up using her child's to save her own life- however this is the only case my dr said that she has seen anyone be able to use it. The probability you would actually need it it super low but it's insurance.

There are so many banks out there, and they can be expensive. MAZE cord blood seems to have the lowest price and you dont have pay any thing every year  plus theyr'e not a gigantic company that doesnt care about the little person...i think this is their link https://www.mazecordblood.com/index.php  and just saw that theyre giving $100 off.. every little bit helps i guess. i think its important just my opinion

This is basically the only reason I would do it.
  • I'm not banking, but I've donated cord blood from my 2 previous babes and will donate for this one too. I did it through the local blood bank.  Filled out all the pre-donation questionnaires and they sent me a collection kit.  All I have to do is bring the kit with me and the physician will collect the blood after delivery.  I figure why waste such valuable blood when someone could use it!

  • i have banked all of my kids' cord blood and have my kit for this lo, too. i use lifebank and they offer a few different payment plans so you don't have to write the big check if you don't want to.

  • We are doing it through CBR.  DH has a history of immune issues and after talking with our OB, he said that in our situation, given DH's history, he would recommend it.  CBR gave us a nice discount in addition to the existing twin discount so we went with it.

  • They will be collecting using the cord blood for my little ones operation, directly after birth. However, before we knew of the SCT, we were planning to bank with ViaCord.
  • After some research I found that it is not useful to bank the cord blood if you are not a risk for needing it in the future. I have also learned that they can now take anyone's cord blood and strip it of its DNA and then modify to match your child's (or whoever is using it) DNA. After learning this I am going to look into donating it rather than paying oodles of dollars to save it for just my family that more than likely won't ever need it.
  • We banked with out first LO and have the kit for baby #2. We have used CBR and got 200$ off the first time and 400$ this time. We did the 12 month plan and will pay $147/mo. It's prob rare that we will ever need it but better safe than sorry. I don't want any regrets.
  • I won't be banking our cord blood because of the cost, but Im glad to see that there are donation programs. Something I did not know hospitals did until after reading your posts so I will be checking into it and making the donation.

I looked into donating the cord blood but am not eligible according to a questionnaire I had to fill out. It's either because DH had cancer or I was treated with methotrexate due to an ectopic pregnancy. So, be sure to see if they even want your cord blood before making the donation! (We would have still paid our doctor a collection fee even for a donation so I'm glad I found out before we did that.)
  • Using cbr. I had my mom do the research for us since I found it completely overwhelming. We're lucky my parents are paying the initials fees and we'll just pay our yearly storage fee.
