Too little weight gain?

I went to the doctors yesterday and I am 16w4d and I've only gained 2.6 pounds!! By this time with my dd I had gained about 10! I am eating healthy and exercising moderately but I have no idea why the baby weight isn't happening. I'm not even showing yet! The doctor yesterday told me that I needed to gain weight but didn't offer up any advice on how to accomplish that. I know every pregnancy is different but I feel like something is wrong. Even though we heard a heartbeat. Anyone else not gained much weight?!

Re: Too little weight gain?

  • I've gained about the same amount but I'm overweight and not worried at all. With DS the weight started coming around this time and in the end I had gained 26 pounds. But sorry to say I've got no advice about gaining weight since I'm usually on the other end of the spectrum. :-)

  • I am 15w4d and -2 lbs. My OB asked my DH if I was eating. Which I am now, and a lot! Although, I struggled with gaining weight before my BFP due to IBS so I am not surprised that I am still struggling. I am trying to throw in a milkshake or something like that into my diet at least once a week. It's not the healthiest, but it seems to keep me from losing any more even if I am not quite gaining yet.

  • You're only supposed to gain like 2lbs by the end of the first tri so I'd say you're ok. I gained all my weight between 22-32 weeks last time.

  • With Peanut I didn't gain an ounce of weight until almost 24 weeks.  The scale read the exact same my first 4 appointments.  My dr. wasn't worried about it so I didn't and he was a healthy 7 lbs 15 oz when born.  With this one I'm only up 3 lb. or so; pretty close to your gain.
  • Well typically best way to gain is to increase calorie intake... Not being snarky, just captain obvious.

I am always underweight (when not pregnant) and at one point it was so bad that I was googling healthy ways to gain. Don't automatically go for donuts and milkshakes just use full fat milk, yogurt and cheese, eat lots of avocados, add grapenuts to cereal if you eat it, nuts and PB are good, lots f bananas and mashed potatoes etc...
  • I'm 17 weeks tomorrow and I'm down 8 lbs, I'm over weight tho so my doctor says it's normal. She said I should gain by next appt. I believe the regular weight gain for first tri I'd between 2-4 lbs so you sound like your on track to me.
  • Add extra calories daily. An extra snack or two could help you gain weight. Personally I've gained like 8 lbs (I'm 15 wks and had only gained 3 at this point with my last pregnancy). I tell myself it's all the muscle I'm building at the gym, but realistically I know it's my Easy Mac obsession.

  • I gained 6-7 pounds in the couple months before I got pregnant because my hormones went crazzzzzy. I've only gained 1 pound so far and my doctor isn't overly worried about it because of the extra weight I already have on me. I guess it depends how much you weigh or if you're underweight.

  • I've lost twelve pounds since my BFP. The doctor didn't seem worried about it though so until he has a problem with it I'm not going to worry about it!! ;)

  • I've lost about five pounds, but have gained a couple of those back.  My doctor wasn't thrilled that I was down 2 lbs from my initial appointment, but since the morning (all day) sickness has gotten worse, sometimes it's just hard to eat.  I'm not too fussed about it because the baby it growing right on target so I think that in general I'm probably getting enough.  I figure the weight gain will come eventually.

  • According to my doctors scale, I have not gained a single pound. I feel way fatter and like a house, so idk.

  • I've gained 3 pounds so far. I will find out Tuesday if my doctor is concerned. Love it when it's actually ok to gain a little bit of weight my body doesn't want to.

EAT ALL THE FOOD! Seriously, can I live through you? I'm on a diet to fix my fatty liver while pregnant and while I have been super successful and my doctor is beyond happy, I just want to eat all the junk! Last time I was pregnant I only gain 23 lbs. I did this by eating what I craved but eating healthy the rest of the time. Maybe something like that?!
  • I go up and down a lot, the first trimester i gained 10lbs and a week into the second one altho I'm eating an.insane amount compared to the first, I've actually give back down to prepregnancy weight and I'm not fluctuating unless i don't poop. But baby appears to be fine so I'm not super worried. I definitely find it odd tho considering how much i gained even in the beginning with my first.
  • I'm down almost twenty pounds, and my doctors aren't concerned; in my last pregnancy, I only gained two pounds, and they were okay with that as well. Of course, I was overweight to start with, so that was a big part of it.
  • I gained 3lbs at first then I lost 5lbs. Saw my Dr. today all she told me was try not to loose anymore weight, but she didn't seem overly concerned about it.
  • I am 16w 1d and I have actually lost 14 pounds since being pregnant. Now granted...this is my first child and I am overweight by the BMI thing..my nurse midwife is not worried. I have not been sick and I have been eating healthier and exercising routinely. I sometimes worry something is not right since I am bit gaining weight yet. I ask her about it almost every time but she reassures me all is well. So you are not alone in not a lot of weight gain. Hope this helps make you feel better.
  • The baby only weighs a few ounces so that sounds like plenty to me. I've lost 8 lbs and my doctor has no concerns.

    I have gained 3lbs of the 10lbs I lost. Doctor wasn't concerned.

I gained 7 pounds like a month after my BFP but now somehow I am down 4 pounds and I have been eating more than I was in the first tri.  So weird.  Hopefully all will be okay.  I am overweight to start with so I am thinking it's probably not a huge deal.

Your body needs more calories in the second trimester compared to the first, which is why you are probably eating more and not gaining weight :) I'm eating more and still losing weight!
