Working Moms

Can we do a judging post?

I'm judging one of our neighbors. Our town makes it incredibly easy to recycle. They provide two huge bins - one for trash, one for recycling - and it's single stream recycling. So no need to separate out newspapers, plastic, glass, etc.

There's one house on our street that never has their recycling bin out on trash days.  They don't recycle at all.  Now, I understand that some houses don't have the space for a bin to keep inside, but one day, I could see cardboard boxes sticking out of the top of the trash bin.  How hard would it have been to throw those in the recycling bin??

Also, I'm judging myself a bit.  For a lot of not very good reasons, my self esteem is just in the toilet right now.  Work is crazy, and I'm getting a bit of an inferiority complex.  I've been gaining weight despite working out more and watching what I eat.  My favorite suit was a little snug today.  :(

Also Judging myself because I caught my 4.5 year old DD commenting that she wanted to lose weight the other day.  I thought I had been super careful about the way I've been talking about it.

Anyone else???

  • I was judging a mom I saw with a pretty young baby facing Out in an ergo. It's not designed to face out even for older babies.

I don't even understand how that could have been done.  Seriously.  Can't figure it out.

I would be guilty of the popcorn thing if I worked in an office.  I'm *trying* to lose weight and popcorn is a filling low calorie snack and I have it most afternoons.

I judge my mom and her procrastination.  She, my sister + BIL, and my family leave for vacation next week.  I work 35/hrs per week and have 2 young kids. My sister works PT and is 26 weeks pregnant. We both seem to have our act together getting ready for the trip where my mom who doesn't work and whose "at home" kids are 16 and 18 can't seem to get anything done.

I also judge the no recycling thing. It's not that difficult! My husband puts stuff in the trash when the recycling bin gets full. Make room, bitch!

I judge my coworker for bragging about putting her crying 10 month old son back in his crib for the night because she needed sleep.  Not CIO, just letting him cry for hours.  Obviously something was wrong with her son if was crying so much.

    ETA: typo.

That chaps my @ss.  I have mentioned a former coworker on here before that let her 4 month old CIO for more than 2 hours without checking on her for 2 days in a row.  When she finally did check her, she was, in CW's words, "covered from head to toe in puke and poop".  Both times.  I wanted to cry.  CW thought it was the funniest thing ever.

Said CW quit to be a SAHM.  She never said one nice thing about her kids when we worked together, so i can't imagine how that's going...
  • @Merry82, what's a diaper party? Is that like a baby shower but all the gifts are cloth diapers? I'd actually go to one of those!

I've only ever heard of them for a first baby and they are held for the new Dad. All the guys get together for a "party/poker/bbq/golf outing" and all the quests bring the new Dad a package of disposable diapers, or cloth if they are choosing to go that route.

I've had to do it before. We were one of those "lucky" families that was blessed with a stubborn, loud child, who thinks middle of the night is time to party. Nothing wrong, she'd be fed, clothed, clean diapers, etc, was just upset about being up when we weren't. She could literally cry for over an hour when nothing was wrong. For the first year at least, I didn't sleep longer than 2 hour stretches, and occasionally, I *needed* my sleep more than DD *needed* me to entertain her.

*BUMP HATES ME TODAY... stuck in the box again...*

@K3AM - I think your circumstances are different.  Of course there are times that you needed to put DD to bed to get sleep.  Of course there were times that my CW needed sleep, and @milkergirl1's coworker needed sleep.  I think the difference is the bragging.  My CW thought it was hilarious that her 4 month old DD was left lying in her own feces and vomit for 2 hours.  Laughed hysterically.  I would feel awful if I'd done that to my DD.  I certainly wouldn't be bragging about it.  But the kid is fed, dry, not sick, and just wants to be up?  Yeah, I'd put my kids back to bed and let them yell, too.

  • The garbage thing reminds me of my neighbours. I don't judge because they put out a lot of recycling and green bins (organic garbage, but they also put out a TON of garbage. I don't understand how they have so much garbage....

I just judged on my fb, so might as well transfer it here. I can't believe how many moms show up to school without their smaller children buckled in to anything. On the one hand, it's a private school, so tuition is eating into their budget, but on the other hand if you care enough to shell out cash for tuition, I would think you'd care enough to scrounge some up for a seat for your toddler.

My ILs don't like to recycle. Slowly but surely, they are getting into it, but they still put out 2-3 bins of trash each week. This is in a 6-person household. My 3-person household could barely fill one bin in two weeks even if we were throwing everything in the trash.

WTF! No car seat at all??

I'm judging the mom I saw last week driving into the Kohl's parking lot with her baby (I would guess 9 mo - 1 year) in her lap.  Buckle that baby in a car seat properly!  Geez, it only takes 30 seconds!  How can people be that lazy and not care about the safety of their children?!

I'm also judging myself (and DH) for not being better at researching penalties for cashing out a Roth IRA in less than 5 years from when it was opened.  Thank you, IRS for clarifying that the withdrawal should have been taxed.  (So yup, that means the government double-taxed that income.)

I also judge people who are too lazy to recycle, especially when single-stream recycling is available to them.

This!  It's a great snack if you're trying to keep your weight down. I eat it in the office a lot, but I can see how the smell would get to some people.  I will make it at home and bring it in from now on.

I'm judging myself for drinking a whole bottle of wine last night, on a work night, after a BFN on Clomid.  I was so hopeful it would work.  Well, it did work, I just didn't get KU this month.  Onto month 2.

    What?? isn't that illegal?
That was my thought.  Pretty sure it has nothing to do with cost and everything to do with the law.

FYI you can buy a Cosco Scenera (highly rated by Baby Bargains) for like $50.  If you can't afford $50 for a carseat to keep your child safe, you certainly should cut back on things like private school.
I could actually see seats in the van that prompted me to post, but the kids weren't in them. DS was in daycare after school until a few weeks ago, so I've been blind to this going on. I wish I'd thought of it sooner, I would have found something official on carseat safety for the school to put in the weekly folders, and I believe they would have done it. (only a few days of school left at this point)

  • I will judge a friend I have on facebook complaining about how hard it is to clean the house, do the laundry, make dinner and run errands with her son. What I really want to tell her is try doing all of that plus spending at least 10 hours commuting to full time job that you spend over 40 hours a week doing---only to go home and spend your weekends doing all of those things while still having a child. Of course I would never tell her that---but sometimes I just want to pitty myself or give myself a pat on the back for doing it all. I get that SAHM isn't perfect either---but I only wish that I had time during the work day to get a thing or two done around the house like I know she does.

I would leave a note and $50 on the car of the women driving her private kids to school telling her to use the money to buy a car seat. Just to make her feel like an idiot....

Ouch...do you mean cashing out completely like including interest?  I'm curious because we plan on withdrawing from the principle amount of MH's Roth IRA when we finally buy land and build a house.

@MarBee1214, there are exceptions for a Roth IRA withdrawal when it comes to first time home ownership. And you shouldn't be taxed on the principle upon withdrawal, because that is post-tax money. If you don't wait 5 years though from contributing, then the earnings will be taxable and possibly penalized.
