I'm a lurker and here's my story

Although I have very infrequently posted, I'm basically a lurker, so I'll give my story.

I'm a pharmacist who just had my first baby with my husband of 9 years.  I honestly had a great pregnancy and decided to have a natural, drug-free birth at the hospital where I work. We also decided to wait to find out the sex of the baby until birth.  In my mind it was going to be this amazing, emotional surprise.

Labor wasn't too bad for the first 10 hours.  My husband was a great coach, and when I found out that I was fully dilated, I thought the worst (transition) was over.  But after almost 2 hours of (painful) pushing, I was having a weird out-of-body experience and started screaming like a woman in a horror movie.  I'm sure I scared all the other women who were trying to sleep at 4am.  The baby's heart rate was dropping and they needed him out.  I gave a final push or two with my eyes squeezed shut like they were for most of my labor.  The nurse had to tell me to reach down and feel the baby on my stomach (I still had my eyes shut).  All I could think was, Thank God it's over!  The nurse was like, "don't you want to know if it's a boy or girl?".  I was like, Yes. please (my eyes were still shut).  She said, "It's a Boy!".  I was like, "Nice".  Anyway, not sure if I would do the combo of natural childbirth along with gender surprise again.  I think I could have been more excited about the surprise at another time.

My little boy was 8lb 8oz, 20 inches long and we named him Jasper. It took us a couple hours to decide on his name, but we love it.  He is awesome, and we love him so much!
