First Prenatal Appointment - So Late?

Hello, Ladies!  This is my first pregnancy, so I'm new to all of this.  A friend told me that I couldn't schedule my first prenatal appointment until 8 weeks (I'm assuming this is 8 weeks from the last period?  So, 6 weeks after conception?).  I'm 6 weeks right now and called a week ago to schedule.  First, I tried Women's Specialists, and they said that they absolutely cannot see me until 10-12 weeks.  Their first available appointment was, in fact, during the 12th week (only half-way there: May 2nd...).  Wanting to check around, I called Presbyterian this week, and they said they couldn't schedule me until 10 weeks.  I still would prefer to be seen sooner if possible, but their ability to schedule me around the 10th week was an improvement (April 22nd).  It's still torture, as I can't go in for another month and will be 2 months (or almost through the first trimester) when I go in.  A friend of mine said she was able to go in between 6 and 8 weeks, but I guess all policies are different... does anyone have any first-hand experience of what they're going through/went through or what they know about how healthcare prenatal care goes?  Is 10-12 weeks standard across the board?  Thanks so much!  Super excited and hoping the baby is healthy and growing in the meantime! :)

Re: First Prenatal Appointment - So Late?

  • I don't know if that's the standard, but due to insurance issues I didn't get to see the doctor til I was almost 10 wks. For me it wasn't a big deal, as soon as I found out I was pregnant I just switched to some over the counter prenatal vitamins, which I still take.

All they did at my first appt was draw blood, give some basic info, and answer any questions I had. I had already lost 8 pounds from awful morning sickness and they weren't concerned about it. I didn't have my first ultrasound until I was 19 weeks and the first time they measured my stomach was at my 26 wk appt.

I honestly felt like most of my early appts were a waste of time just because nothing really happens. So basically, I wouldn't worry about it, even though the wait is hard. Just take it easy and take care of yourself until you can be seen. Of course if any major issues come up call them back and see if you can be seen earlier.

  • 11 weeks is when the dr saw me for the first time. Said it was standard.
  • I saw my doctor at 7 weeks but only because I am high risk and the same doctor had just performed a D&C on me 3months before. from what my friends say, first appointment is always around 10-12 weeks.
  • Standard is 8-12 weeks UNLESS you are having problems or have a hx of problems, then you will probably be seen sooner. Otherwise, it'll be too soon for them to see anything on U/S. And that will freak you out, trust me. So if everything is normal, you have no issues, then you should be expecting that 8-12 week mark.
  • ABQ Health Partners wasn't going to see me until 8 weeks. I was flying out of town right at 8 weeks so they scheduled an appt with me at 7. I couldn't see the doc, they would only schedule first appt with a midwife. It was a urine sample, blood draw, and info giving appt. My next appt they scheduled for me was at 12 weeks (just had that appt last week). I could schedule that appt with the doc or midwife of my choice.
