Lactose Sensitivity and Supplimenting

I'm mostly a lurker here but have been following since I found out I was pregnant. You ladies are how I got through this pregnancy!

I am just wondering if anyone here is dealing with a lactose sensitivity? My DS is 6 weeks old and I bf but have had to Suppliment from the beginning due to supply issues. When he's on a regular formula he gets gassy if he gets it too often, I only Suppliment when he needs it.

We started on Enfamil, then on recommendation regular similac which is better but still not quite. We are going to try the broken down protein Similac but wondering if anyone has other suggestions before going completely lactose free. I was told if I can avoid that I should. My dr says keep trying things but avoid soy. Any advice?

Re: Lactose Sensitivity and Supplimenting

  • My little guy has a milk protein allergy and I supplement, so my pediatrician had me switch to Nutramigen by Enfamil. I also eliminated dairy from my diet to clear my breast milk. Hope you find a good fit!

  • It is almost certainly not lactose he's sensitive too. Lactose intolerance is extremely rare in babies and breast milk contains lactose no matter what you eat. It is usually the proteins (milk protein and/or soy protein are the most common culprits) that babies are sensitive too. You need to eliminate all dairy, not just lactose, from your diet if that's the case.

  • What @Rrrrrachel said is very true.

It is nearly impossible that babies are lactose intolerant since that is an acquired intolerance when one is older (per the pediatrician, and LC). But they can be allergic to the protein and if they are allergic to the milk proteins they are more likely to be allergic to soy as well. I have a milk protein allergy and have since birth, I am also very sensitive to soy. Babies can just be gassy at times.

Gripe water has been a miracle cure with my LO. She would scream every time she had to poop or fart. After just a couple days of a little grip water in the morning she is much more comfortable.

Also know that if you decide to go dairy free in your diet, or for baby, that it can take like 6 weeks for it to all be out of your system and notice a difference in baby.

  • I do formula (Similac regular) bottles with breastmilk mixed in for the twins. I go to a natural health clinician who uses natural body response techniques and I take what they need to be able to better digest the formula and it gets passed to them through the breastmilk. This has been amazing for me :)
