Constipated baby

Anyone have any recommendations for helping a constipated baby? He's 6 months and BF, we started solids though and I think the apples are blocking him up. He had a small, hard stool this morning but that's it. Any suggestions? We gave him prunes earlier this afternoon but no go yet. If he hasn't gone by tomorrow I'm calling his ped.

Re: Constipated baby

  • We have had constipation issues since starting solids and I give him the gerber apple prune juice and it seems to help him out.

  • It's my understanding that a BF baby can go up to a week without pooping even with introducing food. If he isn't bothered by not pooping I wouldn't worry.

  • I've been going through this as well, I feel so bad for my little. They say a week when exclusively breastfed, but that changes when they start solids. He's been constipated, and I've intro'd prunes, juice, and he's on a fruit only diet. It's helped some. I hope it gets better for you, bc we are really struggling over here. Prior to this LO had bloody stools
  • Thanks for the suggestions, no one warned me about this!! I will try them and hopefully something will work, I feel so bad for the little guy!!

Our ped says not to worry unless it gets beyond 3 days.  She recommends prunes, apples, and green vegetables and not giving any cereal for a day or two.  On day 3 she recommends juice if other things still haven't worked.

  • The apples shouldn't be stopping him up, they should have the reverse effect. Anyway, I'd try giving a bit of diluted apple juice.

  • Thread jack: what are some more "binding" first foods (don't say bananas, we tried those)? Thanks!

  • Thanks @JoeLies and @LJGS1010...looks like I'm making applesauce today! She's eating Earth's Best multigrain cereal which is like barley and spelt but so far it's not binding her up at all.

  • The prunes did it!! Happy baby now :) I'm pretty sure it was the apples, he had been eating something with apples in it (purées & oatmeal) for four days in a row. He had a couple of other things too but that was the one consistent thing.

We have used the 'lubricated thermometer' method (Vaseline on a thermometer, inserted just a bit into the baby's rectum) and it worked. We also had to use a glycerine suppository once (at our pedi's recommendation). Pro tip: make sure LO is on a towel you can immediately throw in the wash. And wear old clothes.

This is what we had to do and then we gave her diluted pear juice or prune/apple juice. It's not easy dealing with a constipated baby. Good luck and I hope now that he has gone that he will stay regular. :)

  • I do 1/2 oz of baby pear juice from gerber. It works really well
  • L had the same issue when we started solids (and we started with sweet potatoes). I found giving her an ounce of water with her meal in a sippy cup as well as increasing my water intake helped a lot. The girl would not let me get prune juice anywhere near her.... But the water helped (to the point of pooplosions). I imagine it's a big adjustment for their little systems!!
