What can I do to help a mom with baby in NICU?

DHs cousin just had a micropremie. Baby is in the NICU and will be there for months. I'd like to send a care package to her or something to show our support. They live too far away to really help. Any recommendations on what would be useful or appreciated?

Gift cards for gas stations and chain restaurants like Subway are often helpful. Grab and go snacks like granola bars dried fruit and pita chips. Maybe lactation cookies if you know that she is pumping. If they live far from the hospital they may want some money or gift cards towards a hotel room as well.

portable phone charger, quarters for vending machine, books/e-reader, gift card for digital prints or digital memory books, good hand cream (apparently your hands are always dry from constant washing).

I also love the restaurant and gas gift card idea.

  • My friend reccomends little soft coolers (if she's pumping) with hand sanitizer and lotion.

Books are good too. You can do some baby board books and something your friend might like to read.
IVF, acupuncture, meditation and a miracle.

  • I think the gift cards for gas, restaurants and others are great. When my nephew was in the NICU, I sent a care package full of magazines ranging from real to trashy. I figured no one was doing any deep reading but everyone enjoys flipping through People, Rolling Stones, etc. I also added gifts for the other kids in the family if there are any.

  • All great ideas and we're greatly appreciated when my LOs were in the NICU. Other ideas: pay for her parking at the hospital for a month, have someone to do yard work (with it being summer time). The gift cards for gas and food are really the best though. Ask about the hospital policy on preemie cloths - but nobody prepares for that and if allowed she might appreciate a few items.
  • Thanks for the advice ladies. I'm contacting DH's aunt b/c I don't even know what hospital they are at. I'm wondering if we should just get them a Visa gift card and they can use it wherever. We will likely coordinate with DHs siblings to make a group gift. Unfortunately none of us are familiar with the city where cousin lives.

It's so sad, she didn't even have a baby shower yet, I don't even think she registered yet.

If you go the Visa gift card route and want to add something more personal I think a warm shawl or shrug and some comfy slippers with solid tread would be nice. Honestly the gift card will be greatly appreciated. I'm sure they will take a big financial hit over the course of the hospital stay and have to buy a lot of things for themselves when discharged.
