Hotdogs...

haha so I need some ideas/advice!

my parents are having a lot of family over for memorial day and we already said we would be there but my mom just said they would be grilling hotdogs for lunch. I now have no idea what to do... I read that you shouldn't be eating hot dogs if your'e pregnant but would it be ok for me to have just one?? We havn't shared the news yet as we're waiting for fathers day and not quite ready to announce but if I don't eat a hotdog my parents will know something is up and I dont want them knowing just yet. This is such a small problem to have haha so I feel a bit silly even posting about it but does any one have any ideas or know if it's that big of a deal if I just eat one? DH suggested we bring our own food but I just know my mom would put it in the fridge and say we'll cook this if we need it! some people may hate hotdogs but I LOVE them so it will be very odd if I say I dont want one or don't feel good or something...

Hmmmm any chance of them cooking hamburgers too? Then you could have one of those? Or maybe if its cooked relly well? Like almost burnt? IDK. I avoided them my last pregnancy.

Your parents would instantly suspect pregnancy if you didn't eat a hotdog?! I must be the only person surrounded by people that don't pay enough attention to what I consume.

Eat a hotdog. Just make sure its thoroughly cooked.
haha okay I think I'm just being paranoid.... lol

yeah if there's another option i'll go the safe route and choose something else for sure! all they mentioned were hotdogs but we'll see!!

If my parents knew I absolutely loved something, and then one day decided "No, I don't think I want it" yes, they would be suspicious. Maybe not jump to pregnancy as the reason, but they would be on my case about it. lol. On that note, I had 3 hot dogs last weekend at a birthday party. I LOVE Glaziers and if I ever turned one down, people would wonder what was up. lol.

  • As long as they're fully cooked, they're fine. Hot dogs are, as weird as it sounds, one of my favorite foods, so it would certainly send up red flags if I didn't enjoy at least one. Just make sure you get one that's spent a little extra time on the grill, eat it right away, rather than letting it sit at room temp and you'll be ok.

I did this recently at a work BBQ for the same reason

  • I love hotdogs as well, and cheddar brats (my husband calls them the finest of the wrapped meats). I had 2 brats last week. Probably won't eat too many more but in moderation, one can't hurt. Honestly, what if you didn't know you were pregnant yet? Then you would have eaten them anyway. Just my opinion. Same with the soda I drank yesterday at the ballpark.
  • I don't know. I know you're not supposed to eat lunch meat.... and hot dogs are just ground up lunch meat? Right?

You're not supposed to eat lunchmeat because of the risk of listeria, which is eliminated when the meat is cooked. As long as your hotdog is heated thoroughly, it should be fine.
(Fyi, the risk of listeria is also present in fruits, veggies, and soft-serve ice cream.)

That being said, both lunchmeat and hotdogs are super high in sodium, so we shouldn't be eating them regularly -- pregnant or not! One shouldn't hurt though...
  • thank you everyone!!!
  • Make sure it's fully cooked through and you'll be fine :)

Someone already posted about hot dogs being safe if fully cooked and only being "dangerous" because they are in general bad for you, but I ate hot dogs every time I went to a check up when pregnant with lo, the hospital was right near costco.  I actually don't like hot dogs normally but when pregnant, HELLO hot dogs!   I will admit that once I was going to go out to dinner with friends but ate a hot dog at costco right before because I was pregnant and i NEEDED a hot dog right then.
  • I think as long as it is thoroughly cooked it shld be fine

i love you, my little mooncake mahal kita

  • I ate hot dogs throughout my last pregnancy and he came out perfect!
  • First, I think it would be rude to bring your own food to a picnic/cookout. Second, I think this baby might be made out of hotdogs? That is pretty much all I've been eating since the stick turned pink. I'm such a rebel.  :ar!

  • I ate hotdogs, cold meat sandwiches (some even from Blimpy's and Subway, gasp!) as well as cheeses and things during all of my pregnancies. IF something is questionable don't eat it. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do to get by and sometimes to fulfill cravings.
