Ameda and/or The First Years by TOMY breast pump feedback?

Hi ladies - the list of places that my insurance company gave me will only cover 2 kinds of breast pumps - the Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump or The First Years Breastflow miPump Double Pump by TOMY. Of course, none of them cover Medela. Does anyone have any feedback on either of these 2 pumps? Pros and cons. Thanks!

  • I have the Ameda Purely Yours and I am not a fan. It takes forever to pump 3 or 4 ounces. A few times my nipple was purple after pumping. I just got the First Years Pump from a friend, but I haven't tried it yet. I'm interested to hear other ladies experiences.

  • I agree with PP the ameda is a PITA. I subsequently got a medela and I get twice a as much twice as fast.

  • Ameda pump made my life miserable for 4 months pumping at work, buy the medela!
  • I have the Ameda and it works quite well for me. I did have to buy correct fitting flanges but would have to do that with the Medela. I opted for the Ameda because it is a closed system which means the milk doesn't get in the tubing or motor.
  • Thanks, ladies! Since insurance covers it, I may get the Ameda as a backup, but will probably look into just buying or renting a Medela one.

My Ameda works great so far.  I have no problems emptying my breasts and it only takes me around 10 minutes.

ETA: I usually get 8-10 ounces at a time.

I also have the Ameda and find it easy to use at work. I can get 8-10 ounces in 15 minutes or less. I also needed to buy bigger flanges. I have never tried another pump so I can't really compare it, but so far I am satisfied. And it was free!
