Episiotomy advice

So I had to have an episiotomy to get my son out (you probably guessed that from the title of this post)!
Anyone who also had one have any advice/ tips on dealing w this. I had a c/s w my first so vag stiches are a new ball game!

Re: Episiotomy advice

  • I've never had an episiotomy but I've had tears with both my sons. All I can say is that the numbing spray (dermablast/plast?) That I was given is a godsend.

  • It will sting for about a week
  • Oops, cut off: my biggest advice is to not hold your sneezes back, laugh gently, and don't use muscles to stop pee.

Today is day 6 for me since the birth and episiotomy. I would say it was pretty painful to do just about anything but sit still for about 3 days. Since then I've just been mildly sore and it hurts after a BM. For the last day or so I've been sitting Indian style and have been much more mobile. It does get better!
  • I had an episiotomy and a 2nd degree internal tear. I am on day 8. The only problem I am having is that I feel constant pressure in my butt. Like the baby is crowning again.

  • I had an episiotomy and a 3rd degree tear. Dermaplast and pain medications are my friends. Use the peri bottle and pat gently. I am 6 days PP and I will say that today is significantly better than it has been. My biggest problem has been over doing it and before I realize it I'm in a lot of pain. I've been able to move around the house on my own since day 1, some times slower moving than others.

  • Peri bottle, tucks pads, dermaplast, ice packs, and sitz baths. I'm 18 days pp and the swelling just went away about 2 days ago. I'm still a little afraid of what it looks like down there. I call it the war zone. I'm actually still using the peri bottle and the tucks. Good luck with your recovery!

THIS! Just today I said to my husband, 'it feels like something is trying to come out of my butt.'

My husband refers to my vagina as 'the carnage' now. He got a little too curious during delivery.

I'm joining this club! I broke down and called my midwife cause I almost couldn't walk and I'm 12 days post. She advised doing kegals, it actually helped a ton with the muscle tears in a 2nd degree tear.

Yes!!!! Every time I laugh cough or sneeze I tell my DH that it feels like my ass is going to blow out! My advice for the stinging is to try standing a little to pee. For me, it diverted my pee in a direction away from where it was raw and stung. I'm 11 days pp and after about a week it was significantly better.

I had one, I don't believe I had any additional tearing though. Use the peri bottle to clean, and make sure you pat dry. I definitely moved gingerly the first several days, both from discomfort and a fear of popping a stitch. I definitely listened to my vag on that. I was given tucks pads and epifoam in the hospital, and Motrin. They all helped. I'm not wiping that far back yet (11d pp), not sure when I will have the nerve to do that. Also, take your stool softener 2x a day, and do so even past your first pp poop. After about 5-6d pp, I started to feel noticeably better.

ETA: I also have felt the pressure described above. It comes and goes, isn't too bad but it is odd.

If you're feeling any stinging while peeing, try rinsing with the peri bottle or even a cup of water while you pee. That will flush it off of your skin very quickly. Then refill the bottle to completely clean yourself as otherwise instructed.

The thing that has helped me the most is putting Epsom Salts in my bath and then soak. It really promotes healing and I've noticed a significant difference in the way I felt after I started doing that. I'm 3 wks PP and I've felt pretty good for about a week. I was feeling good earlier, but got sick and the vomiting really jacked me up.
