Hospital wants to know Pediatrician

Okay, I feel like this is going to sound dumb, but it's driving me crazy.

I started filling out preregistration paperwork for my hospital, and there's a whole consent form for a pediatrician. My sister had kids a few years ago, and she said she just used whoever was on-call when she delivered and just continued to go to them after. The form I have from my hospital makes it sound like I HAVE to have someone preselected.

I have no problem picking someone ahead of time. I found someone nearby, in network, affiliated with the hospital. Great. But do I just list them on the form? Or do I call them and let them know I've selected them?

I would at least give them a heads up so the practice know just in case for whatever reason they would need that person. I also agree with you that I would think that the hospital would generally use who is on call during the time of delivery.

Hospitals want to know so they can assure you have pedi care lined up for well care.

Most pedis don't actually see them in the hospital unless they have rights there but the on call pedi does for the hospital. You go to the pedi listed the day or two after you leave..

It is the same way they won't let you leave without you physically making their first appointment or at least our hospital won't.

My hospital asks, if the doc/practice has rights at the hospital then they send someone from the practice to check on the baby. If they don't have privileges then an on call doc looks at baby.

I'l be using a hospital pediatrician because we are moving shortly after birth and our selected pedi is over 2 hours away and obviously won't be making the trip or have hospital privileges. That being said, I'll still put them on the paperwork because they ask for it.

It's pretty useful to have one picked out even if the hospital doesn't care about it so you just have to worry about giving them a call to set up your first appointment and have them there for any questions.One less thing to worry about during the first few days of your new life.

It depends on your hospital. Ours requires you to preselect a ped that has privileges at the hospital. They also require that ped to check out the baby before discharge.

Our hospital said that if we did not have a preselected one they would assign us one and we could of course change at any time but they recommended interviewing them ahead of time and picking one so we did that. And the one we picked told us we didn't have to do anything in advance for their office, just give the hospital their name when baby girl is born. So, check with the hospital in case they have specific rules about it but the pediatrician's office seemed to be very easygoing about it

Interesting. I'd have to check. DD1 was seen by the on call pedi for the hospital. I don't believe my pedi makes hospital calls. So I assume DD2 will also be seen by the on call pedi.

If you have a pedi in mind that you'd like to use, you might want to make sure they are accepting new patients at this time. My PCP sees adults and children; we lucked out that he's still accepting babies as new patients but not adults. The hospital we're delivering at will notify him when we're ready to check out of the hospital and schedule our first appointment for us. While we're at the hospital we'll just see the pedi on call.

Being a NICU nurse, I deal with this like every day. The hospital needs to know who your pediatrician is going to be, so that the Doctor can come and evaluate your baby before you leave the hospital. The Pediatrician manages your baby's care, just like your OB Doctor manages yours. You don't necessarily have to choose a specific person, just know what clinic you would like to go to. Then, I think a good idea would be to call that clinic, just to make sure they are accepting new patients. If you just choose a clinic, then the Doctor who is on call, will generally come see you in the hospital. Then, afterwards, you make a follow up appointment for sometime that first week, with whomever you like. Hope this helps!

I can't speak for your specific forms that you fill out. I think that is just specific to how your hospital handles their preregistration process. You can always call and ask questions about it, I'm sure.

I contacted the pediatrician's office to let them know that I had selected him but was told that was not necessary and that my husband (or someone) should just call their office when the baby comes. I am sure every office and hospital is different but that's how it worked for us.

I would call ahead and give/get info from them. With DS I actually had a hard time getting a pediatrician. I called about 5 offices before finding one. All of the others were either not accepting new patients, or didn't accept our insurance.
