Paging the board Nurse Practitioner

@Amjoy25‌ I have a question. Is it common to not menstruate on the low carb diet? I'm late by 6 days. I haven't taken a KU test because we really haven't had sex lately, but I probably will tonight to just double check. I've been regular since I got my period back 5 weeks PP. Just wondering if this is normal.

If anyone else knows feel free to jump in.

Re: Paging the board Nurse Practitioner

  • You recently lost a little weight right? I think you said 11 or so pounds? Back in college when I gained weight and then went off a crash diet to lose it quickly (not that this is your situation), my period skipped two months. It also skips when my thyroid it's wonky.

Oh, usually I'm so regular. I didn't expect a change, but yes I've lost 11lbs in the last 16 days. I wouldn't call it a crash diet. I'm eating plenty I have just drastically cut carbs.

Congrats on the weight loss! I didn't think yours was a crash, but added that bout of info in case my period skipped due to me crash dieting, which would make it irrelevant to your situation, if that makes sense.

Thanks, I still need to lose 8 lbs more. Then I'll finally be at my PP weight

@jalee85 you know I love you, but 11 lbs in 16 days is the definition of crash diet

I can see it not being a crash diet. Less bloating and water weight loss can make it seem more extreme for the time period than it actually is. My brother gave up soda and lost about the same in the same amount of time; after those initial couple weeks it was about 2 pounds a week and then .5ish a week. You're breastfeeding right? Are you including extra calories for that?

  • when I think of a crash diet it's eating substantially smaller amounts of food, but in this case she's still eating a healthy diet.

11lbs in 16 days means you previously were eating like shit. Your weight loss will slow once your body has excreted all the toxins and you should lose 1-2 lbs a week. I haven't had patients say their periods are different, but it deft could be the drastic weight loss.

I was eating horribly! I'm definitely eating enough calories. My milk supply is good. @huntjul‌ I guess a crash diet I think of as significantly reducing caloric intake. I am not. My weight can go up or down in a matter of 5lbs a week without dieting. I didn't actually think 11lbs was too much. Apparently my body disagrees.

I think @Amjoy25‌ said first 8lbs is all water weight. So that means I've lost 3lbs of fat in 16 days. Well within the 2lb per week.

  • Breast feeding has made my period all crazy. Could be a combo of diet and BF. Just sayin.
